Origin, on the outside throughout, covered a lot of unnecessary ground, but closed up with a rush at the end and won going away. Atwood displayed superior speed and was only passed by the winner in the last twenty yards. Divination failed to stay after following the fast pace closely to the stretch, is still on the big side and will improve. Toi San and Short Cake both made up ground in the last quarter. Brooklyn was always outrun and will do better over a longer distance. Tommy Rot pulled up very lame. School Mistress is credited with fast private work. Winner — B. c, by Indio — Flora Hurst trained by T. Welch. Went to post at 3:00. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won in a canter; second driving. Hurstbourne won as if he outclassed his field and is in the first flight of this seasons three-year-olds. He raced quickly into close attendance on the pacemaker over which he prevailed without great effort in the stretch, coming away very fast. Astarita gave the winner a strong argument for nearly a half mile, after which he shook her off without trouble. She held on steadily, however, and ran past Northern Star in the last sixteenth. The latter is a very fast horse and put up a good performance at tho weights. Belle of Troy finished out the journey well. The Rhymer, out of place in sprints, is a fair looking horse this year and came out of the race sound, showed a surprising burst of speed and tired from lack of condition. Captivator closed up considerable ground from a poor start. Olympian ran a bad race today. Whipped and spurred almost from the start, he failed to improve his position at any stage of the race and appears to have developed into a confirmed sulker. Won easily; second driving Raglan, a grand filly, shows phenomenal improvement with each race and was a fast beginner today, running well up on the outside and finishing at the end with an Irresistible rush, which carried her to the front in a twinkling. Pentaur was a prominent contender throughout and stood a long and punishing stretch drive. Hylas got away poorly and closed a big gap and was running fast at the end. Reliance, from a lucky start, held his position with the leaders from start to finish and stuck it out very gamely. Bobadil is improving OOKTCKUiD OX riTTH FAS!. CONEY ISLAND FORM CHART-CONTINUED. and was a close up fifth. Rain or Shine was a sharp contender when a sixteenth out and held on well. Modred made up ground throughout. Tankard indulged Highbee with the lead for half the journey, after which he went to the front and easily held his own to the finish. Adjidaumo was under a drive almost throughout to keep within striking distance of the leaders and ran a game race. Howard Gratz was a safe third when he stumbled over the last obstacle, and was quickly remounted and got up to save third place from Highbee, which had had time to pass him in the stretch. The latter set the early pace and seemed to have a chance when he went down at the end of the first mile. Scratched— 39985 Self Protection, 167; 40014 Victor, 145. Dublin won all the way, opened up a big gap while going up the backstretch and, easing up on the stretch turn, the field closed up on him, but he went away again when straightened for home, tiring badly in the last sixteenth. Himself closed up at the end with a tremendous rush and ran in improved form. Colonel Bill was reserved for six furlongs and moved up fast on the stretch turn, getting on nearly even terms with the winner when a furlong out, but was tiring badly at the end. W. R. Condon followed the winners pace closely throughout and held on gamely in the final drive. Irascible was outrun to the stretch, where he closed up some ground. Winner— Ch. m, by Potentate— Strathrine trained by J. Burkhard. Went to post at 5:00. At post 1 minute. Start straggling. Won handily; second the same. Lady Potentate got away poorly and was interfered with frequently during the long journey, gradually working into a contending position after a full mile of choking and hauling about by Connell in his effort to place her. He stole a march on the favorite, however, obtaining a lead at the half which he was never able to overcome and was going away at the end. She was best at the weights and is a superior class mare on the grass course. Zoroaster was lucky in getting away, was skillfully handled and trailed the leaders close up, but was caught napping when the winner made her move at the half and went after her too late to get up at the end. Circus, inadequately handled, ran a good race and finished with something in reserve. Philippine trailed far out of it and appeared to be in difficulties early, but caught a lot of the early contenders tiring badly at the end. He was a very sore horse in his preliminary and could not raise a good gallop in the first six furlongs. The others fell away quickly when the real racing was on.
