LOCAL TURF GOSSIP. Jockey A. "W. Booker, who rode Miss Crawford in the second race, lodged complaint with the judges that his mount had been impeded in the stretch run by Auditor. The complaint was promptly dismissed. To onlookers it appeared as if the Darden filly had been given a bad ride by Booker, who allowed his mount to swerve from the center of the track to the inside and back again to the center. In the last seventy yards she again went to the inside and when apparently holding third place safe Booker took a stout pull on her, ostensibly to keep from jumping on Auditors heels. This enabled Mizzen Mast, which was coming fast, to nip her out for the small end of the purse. E. R. Bradleys two-year-old bay colt by Lamplighter — Varna died yesterday at the track from lung fever. T. C. McDowells highly-tried two-year-old filly Advantage died Sunday morning from catarrhal fever. Her owner is reported to have refused an offer of 5,000 for her shortly after her victory in the Lakeside Stakes. Fore and Aft, which was the favorite for the Sheridan Stakes, spread his foot in the race and will have to be given a rest for several weeks. Sam Fullen is reported to be very lame, having met with some kind of an injury in his race Saturday and may not be raced again for some time. Ilmarinen, which started in the third race, pulled up very lame and was with difficulty led back to her stable. J. A. Drake and a party of friends left yesterday for New York to witness the running of Savable in the Lawrence Realization at Sheepshead Bay today. Ed Corrigan and his friends are reported to have won heavily on Lute, which won the opening race. The filly was bred by Mr. Corrigan and is a half sister to the fast sprinter Golden Rule. As a two-year-old she was taken to England with the rest of the Corrigan horses, but was only started on two occasions, getting beat once and winning the next time from a field of twenty-five starters. Since her return to America she has been started three times, twice last year, being out of the money both times, and yesterday, when she won. Sharp Bird, which started in the first race, ran out to the fence while rounding the stretch bend. But for the mishap he would have been a strong contender.
