English Lad, as usual, began slowly, but made up ground fast in the final quarter, and fin- I ishing with a great burst of speed, got up in time to nip Auditor and Flo Bob on the post. Auditor showed keen speed for five furlongs and then stood a hard last eighth drive with I Flo Bob, outstaying him to the line. The latter ran his usual honest race and responded I gamely under a hard drive all through the final quarter. The struggle between the first three in the last hundred yards was magnificent. Batts ran an excellent race, making up much ground in the last half and finishing fast. Lonsdale showed his usual turn of speed, but faltered badly when a furlong out. Prince Silverwings was right there for five furlongs and then fell away beaten. Gold Bell began slowly and appeared to have little chance when running near the far turn, i but began to move up when turning into the last quarter, coming with a rush when running next to the inside rail a furlong out, just getting up in time to nip Alfred C. on the post 1 in a hard drive. The latter showed much speed and appeared the winner when a furlong out, but hung just a trifle when challenged by the winner. Captain Arnold made up ground in the last quarter and finished fast, showing gameness under punishment. The Kentuckian finished strongly and would have been third in another stride. Louisville was thoroughly beaten when a furlong out. Frivol made a sharp closing up move just before turning for home, but faded away when the pinch came. .
