Winner — Ch. c, by Bathampton — Balance H. trained by C. J. Smith. I Went to post at 2:30. At post 4 minutes. Start good. Won in a canter; second driving. Counterpoise made the running throughout under a pull and Bullman let out a link in the stretch and finished easing up. Illyria held his own while going up the backstretch and, moving up with a rush from the three-eighths post home, finished fast and ran in suddenly improved form. He was worked out an. additional half after the finish. Futurita got awav none too well and went up the backstretch in close quarters, but with clear sailing closed up fast at the end. Tristesse displayed a lot of speed when she went after the winner on the stretch turn and the effort tired her right at the end, but at that Hicks was caught j napping for second place. Leipsic, a slow beginner, closed a big gap from a bad start Salvatella was not good enough at the weight. Squanto, nearly left, made up a lot of ground. Duke of Kendal was crossed and knocked back a half dozen lengths after which j he was securely pocketed until too late and was pulled up at the end. Won easily; second the same, i Highbee suddenly found his speed and was heavily backed, led throughout and decisively j outpaced and outjumped the favorite. Walter Cleary was ridden a waiting race and not i only failed to jump with his usual freedom, but was dull of speed. He pulled up very lame after the finish and is probably broken down. Gum Honey ran a steady, consistent race and shows constant improvement. Manilian was well up for half the journey. Scratched— 31391 Idle Ways, 149; 40308 Gascar, 146. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won driving; second the same. An unusual spectacle was afforded when Andy Williams at once took a prominent position and held it under a pull for the first seven furlongs and, after appearing an absolute certainty and leading into the stretch, he was unexpectedly under a hard drive to get home by a nose. Daisy Green found the slightly wet going very favorable and forced the running at a steady clip, which she sustained with unexpected gameness. Lady Potentate was a really good mare today and, capably ridden, might have scored over the sulky winner at the end. She got away poorly and went to the outside, losing much ground on the turn, but finished fast and is a superior class mare over a distance of ground. Tribes Hill found this company too hot, especially on a track not to his liking. Past was going well in the homestretch and is evidently rounding to. Scratched — 40452 KIngraine, 106. Long Shot is a fast colt and the going, which was quite wet and slippery by this time, evidently helped to make him stay. As it was he scored a lucky win, stealing a long and winning lead on the stretch turn after having followed the early pacemaker closely from the start The Southerner was much the best and came at the end with a belated rush. He was unable to stride freely in the beginning on account of the state of the going and Gannon was inclined to accept defeat too early in the game, but the colt commenced to gain so rapidly that he went to work on him and only just failed to get up. Mohave was shuffled back to last at the half, but closed up a lot of ground at the end, getting up in time to secure third money in the last stride. Juvenal Maxim displayed plenty of early speed and was always a prominent contender, retiring only in the last sixteenth. Bob Murphy and Tim Payne were both overweighted. Scratched — 40284 Yellow Hammer, 107. Overweights — Juvenal Maxim, 4 pounds. Long Shot, show, 2 to 1. The Southerner, show, out. Mohave, show, 7 to 5. Bob Murphy, show, 7 to 10. Start straggling. Won in a canter; second easily. Floral King evidently outclassed his field and led unextended throughout, winning with ridiculous ease. Lida Leib was the only serious contender and, favored by the going, ran in improved form. Donnelly held on gamely in the first flight from start to finish. Phaser, a good looker, got away in the rear division and, making up a lot of ground, finished with a rush. My Sister ran a game and speedy race. Midshipman, under severe punishment, just about held his position. Floradale has been highly tried and can do better. Scratched— 40456 The Buck, 112; 40374 Topic, 112; 40182 Cap and Gown, 109. Winner— Ch. f, by Crighton — Nellie Bell trained by W. L. Oliver. Went to post at 4:55. At post 2 minutes. Start fair. Won driving; second easily. Gaviota, good, would far outclass this field. She made the running hard held to the far turn, where she seemed done for, but being game she stuck to her work in a long final drive and scored by a head. Ella Snyder moved up at the half and engaged the winner in a long and game battle to the finish, showing improved form. Dekaber was inadequately handled in the final drive, Mathews* finish being noticeably weak. Courtenay was a good horse, ridden by a slow jockey, and should have been closer up. The others were beaten off early in the race. Corrected weights — Sir Ellerslie, 111. Overweights— Gaviota, 1 pound; Ella Snyder, 1; Dekaber, 2. Gaviota, show, 6 to 5. Ella Snyder, show, 2 to 5.
