RUMORS OF A RINGER AT CRESCENT PARK. North Wind, the Winning 100 to 1 Shot, Is Satisfactorily Identified, However. New Orleans, La., January 17. This was another remorseful day for the followers of favorites at the old track, Guiding Star in the fifth race, was the only lirst. choice to get home in front. With such a card as was offered the results should not have been surprising. The races, with the exception of the second, were made up of the cheaper horses the inconsistent kind that are devoid of courage and stamina and as to numbers the fields were cumbersome. North Wind, at odds of 100 to 1 was one of the unexpected winners. Nearly every book in the ring had x clean sheet on him. Notwithstanding this lack of support, there was a rumor in the air after the race that the horse was a ringer. Responsible persons vouched for his identity. In Mimics Daughter, winner of the second race, Len Marders appears to have the handling of a pretty good racer. This miss was making her initial appearance under the colors. She acted like a sensible old-timer at the post, broke quickly, bore restraint until given her head, then moved away from her opponents as if they were anchored and won by six lengths easing up. She is a fine looking filly. Among todays visitors was James B. Brady, owner of OIsea.it and other good horses. He said that Oiseau had up to the present wintered in splendid condition and gives promise of leeoining the champion of the eastern handicap division. Mr. Brady was accompanied by a party of capitalists from the east en route to Mexico. They departed in a private car. Mr. Brady stated that bookmaker Jesse Lewis-ohn, who had such a tremendous losing the past season on metropolitan tracks, had before his departure for Europe invested in 7,000 shares of copper at 91. The stock now is quoted at 114, which means a clear protit of more than 00,000 to Iewis-ohn. Willie Shields left tonight for the east wherehe will spend the next few weeks hunting in the Adirondacks. His horses here will be in charge of his father for the remainder of their stay. Top weight of ISO pounds is assigned Phil Finch in the St. Charles Handicap at a mile and one-quarter next Saturday.
