STEWARDS DECLARE REED INCOMPETENT. Boy Is Charged With Defeat of Briers on Two Occasions and Is Suspended. San Francisco, Cal., January 10. The weather was ideal today and there was a big crowd at Oaklaud this afternoon. Notwithstanding puzzling track conditions, four favorites and two persistently supported outsiders were successful. The stewards got into quick action after the victory of Briers in the fourth race at a mile. Explanations were demanded from the owners, who presumably cleared their skirts, as the blame of the mares dismal reversal was eventually fastened on jockey Heed, who rode her to defeat on two proceeding occasions. Incompetency was the cause assigned for the sentence of indefinite suspension meted out to him. Briers was- bid ui from 1906.sh00 to 1906.sh00 by J. McCarthy, but was bought In by her stable. C. C. McCafferty bid up Alice Cary 00 alwve her entrauce price of 00. She also was retained by her owner.
