A HALF DOZEN "GOOD THINGS" GO WRONG. Tom McGrath the Only Winning Favorite More Comment on Conrieds Running. Sail Francisco, Cal., February 5. Barney Schrei-bers f fleet three-year-old, Tom McGrath, made good in the closing race at six and a half furlongs, after a recent series of heartbreaking failures. He was the only favorite, albeit a lukewarm one, to prove successful at Oakland this afternoon. A procession of supposed "good things" went down to defeat in Janice Marian, Moutanus, Massada, Kquoruni Hex, Whiskey King and Conried. The last named, after liis unlovely preceding effort at u mile, was able to keep in touch with three seconds faster pace today and only succumbed in the last stride of the sprint. The change in riders from 13. Walsh to W. Knapp forced the presumption that the owner is shifting the blame onto the unfortunate jockey. Horsemen agree, however, that no fault nor lack of vigor could be found with the ride and lay the liblilf on the horse, which ran as if waterlogged. The Lady Kohesia was claimed out of the third rave by E. J. Hooper for . Botli Whiskey King and Arestallator broke down. The latter may have ta be destroyed.
