NOTES OF THE TURF. There were so many accidents during the early part of the steeplechase meeting at Nice, France, that the management lowered the jumps and coated the upper portion of the obstacles with white paint. After this fewer horses fell. The vacancy in the Board of Stewards of the Jockey Club of England, which occurred witli the death of Sir James Miller, will, it is said, be filled by the election of Lord Stanley, who is the youngest member of the governing body. It is said in San Francisco that the winnings of "Boots" Duruell on the races at the California tracks this winter will aggregate nearly one-quarter of a million dollars.- It is elalmed that the greater portion of this money has been taken out of handbooks and poolrooms. Paris is to have a new race course. It is to be a magnificent place and will be known as Le Trom-blay. It is to take the place of the track at Co-loiubes and will have seven days of racing during September aud October. There will be no steeple-chasing at the new course. The racing partnership between Colonel Robert Neville, of Virginia, and Charles Pfizer, of New York, has been dissolved. Mr. Pfizer will devote his attention to steeplechasers, while Colonel Neville will continue as a breeder, selling off the young horses he had put Into the firms stable. Before the meeting at Ascot Park Is over there will le put on a race for gentlemen riders, amateurs. Several members of the press will accept mounts, with one or two others. The race will be framed for amateur riders strictly and it will be made one of the events of the season. Los Angeles News.
