BURGLAR SHOT AT WHITNEY HOME. New York, August 18. Three burglars made a bold attempt to rob the country home of Harry Payne Whitney in the Wheatley hills, near Roslyn, L. I., early today. Henry Piper, a watchman, heard the men on the porch. He slipped to the rear of the house, where he came upon two of the men. Piper fired several shots at them and is sure he hit one of them. Piper says that the third man ran around from the front of the house and dragged the injured man away with them. Mr. Whitney and his family are in Europe.
