YEARLING TRIALS AT MONTGOMERY PARK. J. 0. Keene and J. C. Cahn at Memphis to Inspect Their Young Thoroughbreds The List. Memphis, Tenn., September 20. J. O. Keene and J. C. Cahn today tried out their yearlings, which have been broken and are in quarters at Montgomery Park. J. O. Keene has, all told, thirty-five youngsters. Three are the get of his old campaigner, Braw Lad, which died at Keenland Farm near Lexington, Ky., last spring. It was the winnings of Braw Lad added to savings from his salary as a trainer in Russia that enabled Keene to buy the farm. The remaining thirty-two yearlings were bought at the auction sales at Sheepshead Bay during the summer and autumn meetings of the Coney Island Jockey Club at an aggregate cost of 0,050. The. majority of them, came from J. B. Haggins Itancho del Paso consignment. They are all well bred and are, as a whole, a good looking lot. The highest priced one of the collection Is the half sister to Heaslip and she is a racy looking miss. She ran a quarter today better than 25, but the best work was done by the sister to Margaret Morris. She got over the quarter of a mile in 24J. Mr. Keene will ship these youngsters to New Orleans next winter. He returned to Louisville tonight. It will be interesting to follow the careers of this collection of youngsters, for the reason that they represent the first step in an effort to demonstrate the truth or fallacy of a conclusion arrived at by Mr. Keene after a study of the lottery-like conditions attending the selection of yearlings. With the well proved fact that many of the best racehorses have been bought cheaply as yearlings, and that many of the poorest performers on the turf have been sold for extravagant sums in their first years, as a basis for his plans and the fact that it costs the same to keep and develop a yearling bought for 00 as It does one procured at an expenditure of ,000 as an additional thread to his line of thought, he proceeded to buy those individuals which appeared likely to him, yet not particularly fancied by many others. He made up his mind not to go over ,000 for any one yearling and cast Ills average at about 00. He reasons that it he can develop even one superior racehorse out of the thirty-two, he will have been- sustained in his conclusion and will have a profit on his investment above and beyond what the remaining thirty-one may bring him in stakes and purses. Here is the list of the thirty-two youngsters bought out of the sales, together with the prices paid: Bay colt, by Golden Garter Vineyard 300 Bay filly, by Gold Spinner Prose 250 Bay colt, by Bassetlaw Quatrain 250 Chestnut colt, by Golden Garter Salver .... 600 Bay colt, by Royal Flush III. They were all bred at his farm in Missouri, which is near the Woodlands establishment of Barney Schrelber, a few miles from the little town of Bridgeton. They are all the get of the stallion Bitter Root, with the produce of which horse Mr. Cahn has had more than passing success as two-year-olds and three-year-olds this season. He, unlike Mr. Keene, is firm in the belief that it is more profitable to breed, develop and race, than it is to buy from other breeders, though he would take over a likely yearling from another farm did- he fancy the individual and price. Here is a list of Mr. Cahns youngsters, and it Is said that the colt out of Missouri II. is most in his eye: Brown filly, by Bitter Root South Breeze. Bay filly, by Bitter Root Fair Wilmodene. Brown colt full brother to Bitter Miss, by Bitter Root Missouri II. Brown colt, by Bitter Root Servla. Brown colt, by Bitter Root Gold Band. Bay filly, by Bitter Root Siloam. He will race them In California next winter, he says.
