BIG CROWD ATTENDS OPENING AT LATONIA. Four Favorites Win Belltoone Scores at 20 to 1 Phil Chinn Buys Wexford Gossip. Cincinnati, 0., October 22. The Latonia Jockey Club this afternoon began its fall meeting of twenty-four days under most favorable auspices. The attendance was large. Seventeen bookmakers were in line and they found business plentiful though unprofitable. The public landed on the winners J frequently after the second race. Belltoone scored in this race at 20 to 1. Several sharpshooters, however, beat the books on her victory. After the first race favorites triumphed steadily. The racing was spirited from the outset. Starter Holtman was unfortunate in having five of the horses in the first .race, including the heavily backed DOrmont, out of alignment when the barrier was released. Jockey Dearborn, who was riding Ed Early, was jammed into the fence and had his foot. mashed. Starter Holtmari suspended jockey T. Taylor for three days for his bad behavior at the post. Jockey Schilling was fined 0 for a. similar offense. Secretary Lyman Davis . said that nine carloads of horses owned by various owners were shipped to California from Churchill Downs this morning. The horses will be raced at Oakland. Three carloads were shipped from the Downs to Memphis to be rested there until the opening of Xew Orleans. P-T China has jrchajBeifr. His horses Itacatiara and Pirate which at present are quartered at Sheepshend Bay, will be shipped here next Wednesday. W. H. Flzer reconsidered his Intention of shipping John L. Inglis to Xew York and the colt will be started here shortly. E. C. Hopper was among the visitors and was busy during the afternoon assuring horsemen that "hotel accommodations would be plentiful in San Francisco this winter.
