WHY THERE IS SUNDAY RACING AT ALGIERS. "The idea of Sunday racing rather rouses the virtuous indignation of the average person," , says the Memphis Commercial-Appeal in connection-with the announcement that the half-mile track at Algiers, across the river from New Orleans, will open next Sunday. "It would not be possible at any other point in the country, but New Orleans people have the usual tropical liberality of sentiment and fondness for outdoor Sunday pastimes, and, besides, the political situation there is pecnl-lar. The sheriff of Jefferson parish, in which the track is located, is a sort of miniature czar In his own domain, and does pretty much as he pleases, whether the New Orleans city officials or the state officials like it or not."
