BOOKMAKER LHOMMEDIEU IS RULED OFF. Noted Plunger and Layer Fails to Produce Any Convincing Evidence in Self Defense. Cincinnati, O., November S. Bookmaker Steve LHouimedieu was ruled off the turf today by Charles F. Price, M. J.Winn and Charles Grainger, composing the executive committee of the Louisville Jockey Club, for his attempt to bribe jockey W. Fischer to keep Oratorian from finishing in the money on the closing day of the Churchill Downs meeting. The gentlemen composing the executive committee investigated the charge brought by J. B. Dunn, owner of the horse, thoroughly, and gave the bookmaker every chance to vindicate himself, but beyond entering a general denial of the charge LHouimedieu failed to clear himself, whereas Dunns evidence was strengthened by the statement of Fischer. The owner and rider also submitted sworn affidavits attesting to the truth of their statements. LHomrne-dieu did not deny Fischers statement but asserted that Dunns part In the affair was to blackmail him and that he was unworthy of lelief. He was told to submit any evidence that he knew of or had against Dunn, especially If he knew of Dunn having any relations of any kind with other bookmakers. LHoinmedleu submitted a couple of letters attack ing Dunns character, but his main defense was a general denial of the whole story. . Time was given all parties concerned to file their statements, but after waiting several days LHom-niedieu failed to submit any strong defense and today Messrs. Grainger and Winn came up here for a final conference before announcing their decision. Mr. Winn in speaking about the affair said: "Under the circumstances there was nothing for us to do but rule LHonimedieu off, as he failed to make out any kind of a dafense for himself. All that he did was to submit two letters in which the writers claimed that Dunn was unworthy of belief. This boy Fischers statement was really . the convicting evidence, for LHommedieu did not deny that he had been talking to Fisclier. The case comes under rule 189 relating to corrupt practices which states if a person corruptly gives or offers money, share in a bet or other benefit to any person having official duties In relation to- a race, or to- any jockey he shall be ruled off the course.
