CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE OPENING HANDICAP. The first important event of each recurring season of winter racing in California is the running of the Opening Handicap. This is always run on the first day of the California Jockey Clubs meeting and usually draws a good field of speedy mllers. Such fast horses as Satsuma, Recreation, Cromwell, Hager-don, Corrigan, Gold Money and San Nicholas figure in its list of winners, while such other good ones as Libertine, The Roman, Schwalbe, Roslnante, Rosormonde, Kenilworth, Ananias, Fossil, Modrlne and High Chancellor have been forced to go down in defeat in striving for its honors.
