CONDENSED HISTORY OF THREE STAKES TO BE RUN AT SARATOGA TODAY. The Saratoga Cup is one of the longest established events of the American turf and sole survivor from the days when every racing organization of importance deemed it essential to have a cup race over the then regulation distance of two miles and a quarter. It was raced for from lS5.r down to 1SSG and discontinued, but was revived at its present distance of a mile and three quarters in 1001 and Is rightly deemed one of the most important and interesting events of the Saratoga meeting. It has always been popular with owners and in it C. R. Ellison scored the first highly important success of his turf career when Skilful won for him in 1002.
