GOLD LADYS ALBEMARLE. CLOUDBURSTS TURN THE GRAVESEND TRACK INTO A QUAGMIRE. Rye Beats Golf Ball, Which Breaks Down Under Pressure Miss Delaney and Kings Plate Winning Favorites. New York, September 23. A widely published prophecy that New York would be enguired by a tidal wave today came near being realized, but in another way. This region was visited by a remarkable rainstorm, a series of cloudbursts which came at intervals throughout the lay, it be-ins; the heaviest rainfall of which there Is any record bv the local wcatlier bureau. The track was converted Into a shallow canal, of which the stretch for twenty feet out from the inner rail was nearly impassable, the water being so deep. This strip of bad going the jockeys carefully avoided during the races. The attendance was probably the smallest seen on any race track tills season. Not a single one of the seven attractive races carded was seriously mniwil by scratching. First class racing was the rule. Tho solitary stake feature, tlie Albemarle for mares, was easily captured bv Gold Lady, which started a virtually equal favorite with Tokalon, with which jockey Hadtke contrived to get away so poorly as to be practically eliminated as a contender, at the start. Thi! tabled history or the Albemarle Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt Jockey. Val. Time. 1S99 Runaway Girl. 2 112 Spencer ... ,100 1:09 1900 Ashes 1! 109 N. The selling affair at a mile and a furlong, at which the redoubtable little Bowery champion, Rye, and the superlative mudlark, Golf Ball, were engaged, furnished the racing sensation of the afternoon. A tremendous plunge developed on Golf Ball, -while the odds against his consistent opponent steadily receded. Their position in the market should have been reversed as the subsequent running of the race showed, but Golf Ball broke down while leading and allowed Rye to suddenly and unexpectedly Hash past him on the last turn. Whether the result was affected bv the favorites misfortune or rot is open to doubt. The Sullivan clan were seared from supporting their representative with their usual enthusiasm and saw him win an easy race with deep chagrin at their lack of foresight. Golf Ball broke down in the off-hind leg in the same place where he had previously been cut down. Millers splendid jockeyship was an important feature of the afternoons racing. Had he not been fouled on Kings Daughter, he would have had four wins to his credit instead of three. A ir-tuallv four favorites were successful; no layers lost heavilv. They are fast dropping out. Bannell. the newcomer In the steeplechase division, created a favorable impression in his eastern debut. ... Former jockey Simnis, who was denied track privileges last week for an alleged misuse of his badge, was reinstated today by P. J. Dwycr.
