MYORITES AT WASHINGTON c C FOUR OUT OF SIX GIVE THEIR BACKERS A GOOD DAY. b j n o on i Pins and Needles Wins the Vestal Stakes t Oraculum Repeats Killiecrankie Scores for Daly. r li c Washington, D. C, November 20. The weather s c man mailc another of his lightning changes in the climatic program and the overhanging clouds were positively threatening in their demeanor, casting c a gloom over the race course today, which was i depressing in contrast with the sunshine and warmth i of yesterday. The only recompense; afforded the t race-goer was the better quality of the card offered t today. The sixth renewal of both the Vestal Stakes t and the Chevy Chase open selling steeplechase for i gentlemen riders were the features of the day. i The steeplechase lost most of its attractiveness by the withdrawal of one half of the horses entered , and the feature on the flat was also marred by the j best of the Aste entry, Gold Lady, remaining in the stable. The unimproved heavy going was the 1 cause of all the fields being reduced until all pros- 1 peels of good contests were out of the question, i four favorites winning. This had the effect of , putting the weather-depressed crowd in good humor, as the choices were all well backed by the public. 1 There was a considerable improvement in the betting j today. The amount of currency in evidence in the j ring would not indicate any contraction of the i circulating medium or that this was the fag end of 1 the racing season. ; .Monopolist, by showing considerable improvement , over Ids last effort, proved good enough to win the first race from good opponents, among them three which had scored in their last races here. Rosi-miro, which defeated Falcada, Jubilee and Smoker yesterday,, was made the favorite on the strength of that performance, having Doyle up again today. The Iontiac colt from the Ryan Stable showed the most early speed anl proceeded to set a fast pace, but finally gave up the task in the stretcli and was lucky to save third money. The winner went up in the betting and was only lightly backed, while thousands were placed on the favorite. Kara was much the best in the Chevy Chase. Mr. Taylor gave him n well-judged ride and while not winning by anything like a gap he was under a stiff pull all through the last furlong. Mr. Taylor was given a 200 silver cup by the stewards. Navajo, ridden by his owner, was equally secoud best. Essex II. showed speed, but fenced poorly. Dulelan showed the most speed for the first turn of the course, but quit in the last half after fencing badly. The Vestal Stakes was won by Pins and Needles in a canter. She was well rated by Notter for the first mile and easily went to the front, passing the leaders and after a sharp brush with Estimate led through the stretch, winning in a canter. The stable thought Estimate capable of winning and did not start Gold Lady. Estimate ran a good race, but was not good enough to beat the winner today. Grace Cameron led for the first mile on sufferance and quit badly at the end. The condensed history of the Vestal Stakes is as follows: Vcar. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1902 Moon Daisy ....113 OConnor . .1,003 2:44; liKW Wild Thyme ....11C Redfem ... 1,970 2:47 1!04 Dimple 113 Odom 2,305 2:41 KM.-. Santa Catalina. .123 W. Miller. . 1,975 2:44 1900 Nemesis ..113 Horner .... 1,790 2:45 1907 Iins and Needlcsll3 Notter 1,925 2:42 1 Oraculum, owned and trained by ex-jockey Odom, was backed for thousands at the short price of 1 to 2. His owner made no pretense of keeping his 5 belief in the fitness of the colt under cover and all of Ids friends poured their money into the ring. Oraculum led from start to finish and was ridden 1 out all the way by. McDaniel for some reason or r other. ,IIe did not take any chances, riding the 3 colt as if he was trying to equal the track record. The Heno filly, Trash, belied her name when she won the fifth race after opening at 4 to 5 and 1 closing at 7 to 10, the good looking Octoic and 1 New Garter being her nearest competitors in the 0 speculation, both closing at C to 1. Trash ran as if best, drew out at the head of the stretch and j won cantering and well ridden by Notter, who had A previously ridden two winners. Norbitt set the e early pace and probably was second best. McDaniel 1 eased New Garter up when beaten. Killiepranklc won the handicap which finished , the card and incidentally was the first winner out t of the Daly Stable since Sailor Boy won at long g odds at Gravescnd the latter part of last May. The filly was placed in the best going by jockey y Swain and, under a hustling ride, "won by a comfortable margin at the end. Ostrich finislied second 4 after swerving badly in the stretch. Ironsides was s favorite in the opening betting, but the paddock k talent said he would not run kindly In the going g which had the effect of his price receding to 3 to 1. L. He was a contender to the stretch hut tired badly y in the closing drive. Ocean Spray set the early y pace, but quit badly when Killiecrankie moved up. Liebert rode three winners again today, .The ie crowd was good considering tlie showery state of the weather, and took a lively interest in tltfi l features of the afternoon. They were moved trf applause when Taylor was presented with an elaborate silver cup after winning the race for gentlemen !- riders. , . t
