LONG SHOTS AT CITY PARK THE HOLDING TRACK PROVES DISASTROUS TO FORM FOLLOWERS. Mortiboy Takes the Measure of Ace High and Coltness Report City Park Racing May Ee Extended. New Orleans, La.. November 29. Changed track conditions played havoc with form calculations today, and those who pinned their faith to favorites sustained heavy losses, as live choices suffered crushing defeats. This by no means signifies that the twenty-one hooks in line this afternoon laid up much. On the contrary, they were lueky to escape a scorching, as the sharpshooters made successful raids on their hank accounts in two instances. The principal clean-up came with the running of the fourth race, a six furlongs sprint for cheap platers. Black Burn, which was il starler several days ago and failed to get a place, was made the medium of heavy hacking and never left tin- issue in doubt at the harriers rise, winning as ids rider jdeased from Suffice. The poor riding of jockey Delaby stood out during the afternoon. The boy appeared timid and in almost every race he left the barrier pulling up. A few days ago Delaby had a bad fall just at the start in a seven furlongs race, when Frank Lord collided with Coltness. He was unconscious when picked up and it may be that he has not as yet recovered from the effects of the injury he recived on that occasion. At all events, the officials asked his employer, It. E. Watkins. to allow the lad a rest of a couple of days, thinking that it would bring back his lost courage. It Is discretionary, however, with Watkins, as to what course lie shall pursue in the matter, and it may be that he will lect to have .the boy ride ami- trust to luck- thnt he will recover his form. In the third race Severus, the favorite, was a bit slow in starting and in the scramble for positions which came soon after the start was bumped into and sharply cut off. In the mix-up the colt stumbled and threw Koerner on his neck. The hoy tried to scramble back into the saddle but lost his balance and fell off. He struck the ground on his head and was stunned for a time. The winner of the race turned up in Hugh McCarrons Ansonia, which ran in much improved form and won in a canter from Divorcee. ISurlew and ONeill won their first race of the meeting when Cucrnavaca led home twelve others in the opening dash. Considerable criticism attended the running of Ihe fifth, won by Mortiboy, for which Coltness and Ace High wtjre the choices. On his previous showing. Ace High was deemed the best of the others, but for some reason Coltness received most of the hacking. 1. Kellys riding of Ace High was inade-quaic, he seemingly making but slight effort until the race was over, when he came with a good burst of speed that landed him in second place. It is generally understood that in the event of the Fair Grounds not being completed in every detail for the announced opening, the racing will be ja-olonged at City Park for one week. A number of disgruntled ones are advocating a return, to the old style of betting, but it is doubtful if their wish will be considered, as it is the aim of the racing associations to keep the betting ring foreign to the racing. The Louisiana Driving aud Racing Club management made a new announcement today, to the effect 1 hat they had let a contract to a local firm to install ;m electric plant at the half-mile track for the purpose of racing at night. Their effort at night racing will meet with a storm of indignation and protest from the better element and will eventually fiid in failure. .T. L. Rhinock was among todays arrivals, and was closeted in conference tonight with Messrs. Heaslip, Winn, Corrigan and Barnes. Local racing conditions are said to have been principally dis- cussed. The recent heavy rains have given the workmen nt the Fair Grounds a severe setback, and it is more than probable that everything will not he in readiness for the advertised opening date at the old track. Approbation, which is carded to start in the sixth race tomorrow, is the winner of the La Mexicana Stakes at the recent San Antonio meeting.
