PASADENA TAKES A STAKE. WINS THE GENTILLY. HANDICAP IN A HARD-FOUGHT FINISH. Durnell Will Not Be Permitted to Race at New Orleans Tileing Defeats Temaceo .j. Alma Dufour Again. New Orleans, L.T., December IS. The Gentilly Selling Stakes, one of the annual fixtures of New Orleans racing, was the attraction that drew out a large crowd to the Fair Grounds this afternoon. The race proved a keen contest, although it was far from being truly run. The finish found Pasadena and Hyperion If. under the whip, and the former, finishing with rare gameness, won drawing clear. Jacobite, after a rough early trip, managed to finish in third place. Shortly after the start there was a, jam In which Plantland was the principal sufferer. He was crowded against the fence and was forced to be pulled up to keep from going down. Little T. Koerner on Bellwether was not s5 fortunate. While running in a contending position Bellwether was sharply cut off and bumped against the fence. In the scrimmage lie stumbled, and Koerner, losing his balance, fell off. The lad rolled tiround like a barrel for about ten yards and then jumped to his feet unharmed. The race was worth ,00.", the winners part of which was ,075. The tabulated history of the Gentilly Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wr. Jockey. Val. Time. 1S9S Wilson lit! T. The Warren-KIng-Civill-LouIs squabble broke out again today when Sam Louis boosted Dr. McCIuer, winner of the sixth race, to ,200. The hist time that Dr. McCIuer started he ran in Civills name and King run him up . The horse was transferred to J. J. Ryan last night and Louis evened matters up with Ryan for taking Miss Ferris out of a selling race a few days ago by boosting up Br. McCIuer 00. This brings Ryan into the nnatter, and before peace is declared between these warring horsemen the association should reap a rich harvest from their share of the run-ups. It is also adding a little spice to the selling races and tends to make them more popular with the public. After Dr. McCIuer won a big crowd gathered around the judges stand waiting to see the fun. General Manager M. J. Winn was much wrought up today over a story that was sent out by a local correspondent last night in which he was quoted sis saying that entries would lte accepted from "Boots" Durnell and that the action of the Jockey Club would not affect his standing here. Mr. Winn today said: "All rulings of the Jockey Club will be respected by both the Fair Grounds and City .Park ollicials and I may add by every track in the .vest. If Durnell is not goodenoUgh to race in the ciist or in California, he will not be permitted to race here." It is understood that Durnell wired .here asking if he could race his horses at the New Orleans tracks. Word was sent back informing him of Manager Winns action, so this means that he will not come. Thirty layers drew in today, which is a high-water mark for the track this winter. Owing to fthc talk of horses being run hot one day and cold the next, the management is seriously thinking of following the example of the other jockey clubs by appointing a veterinarian, whose duties will be .1o watch the horses in the paddock and report auspicious cases. Every effort will be made to stamp out tills evil. Dr. Keogh, the well known veterinarjan, is spoken of as the man for this important position and no better selection probably could be made. Assistant starter Harry Morrlssey received word from Mars Cassidy that be would leave Xew York on Saturday. Tills means that he will be on band jlo do the starting at City Park on Monday next.
