CITY PARKS CLOSING DAY. OLD HONESTY DEFEATS TEMACEO AND GOOD LUCK IN LYRIC HANDICAP. Guy Fisher Shows Improvement Under a Good Rider —Hyperion II. Outruns Hasty Agnes-Robin Hood in a Canter. Sew Orleans. La.. March 2S. — City Parks racing Reason closed this afternoon with favorable weather and a splendid ottering in the good program, including the Lyric Handicap. The feature resulted iu an astounding upset. Old Honesty, which won the event, led from flag-fall to the finish. In his previous start, when n favorite, lie was beaten off. and his showing then occasioned much unfavorable comment. It was generally rumored after that race that be was unlit and this was partially substantiated by the fact that he tired badly after going three-quart rs. Today, on the contrary, he set a fast paee from the start and, maintaining it throughout, won well in hand from the favorite. Temaceo. with iood I.uck third. Alma Dufour. the second choice, was a distant trailer all the way. The judges began an investigation immediately after the race, but were satisfied with A. J. Goreys explanation. His followers, including . ft. Ellison, again reaped a rich reward. Form somersaults again contributed to the incidents of the afternoon. The most noticeable came with the running of the opening dash lor youngsters, when Guy Fisher b. at a good band of two-year-olds, including Brougham and Intervene. The latter was an overwhelming favorite, but quit badly in the last furlong. The steeplechase, the last to be seen here, was one of the best contests of the season, the first five horses running closely grouped all the way. McAllister, the favorite, winning by a superior ride from Dr. Logan and Dr. Heard. Jockey Notter. on Hobin Hood, simply had to sit still to win. as the Mayberry gelding overwhelmingly outclassed his opjHmciits. The poor showing of Cooney K.. which failed to finish among the first three, was sharply criticised. Hyperion II. again showed himself a good sprinter by defeating a fairly good band of fast ones in the tiirec-tpiarters handicap. Hasty Agnes gaining second plii-e from Colloquy in the closing strides after a furious drive. Batsman, one of the starters, on which J. Sumter had the mount, tripped in some mysterious manner while trailing the others and unseated his rider, who sustained quite a shake-up by the tumble. Steeplechase jockeys Archibald. Heider and Mc-Kiuney will depart tomorrow for Washington to !»• in attendance during the closing days of the meeting there. W. G. King-Dodds has purchased from S. Louis the horses Approbation, Ismailian. Avaunteer and Speight. While being led from the Fair Grounds track to City Dark. Hancock was sufficiently injured to cause him to be excused from starting in the third race, and. as betting had been in progress on tlip race for some time all bets made on Hancock were ordered refunded. John Keegan. who has been in charge as track superintendent of the City Dark track, departs tonight for Cincinnati to take a similar position at I.atonia.
