ROSE QUEENS STAKE RACE. WINS THE RICH GEBHARD HANDICAP IN A CLOSE FINISH WITH LEE ROSE. The Latter s Defeat Due to a Poorly Judged Ride-Belle of Iroquois Left at the Post — Bookmaker in a Scrap. Oakland, Cal.. March 28. — The Gebhard Handicap, at five furlongs, the richest two-year-old stake of the local season, was decided at the beautiful Oakland race course today, under perfect weather and track conditions, and the presence of approximately 15.000 spectators. The flower of the colts and fillies of this age on the Baeific coast was represented in the big field of eleven that went to the post for this important fixture. Lee Rose, the leading juvenile celebrity engaged, monopolized most of the attention. It was practically Lee Rose against the field, and he carried a fortune in wagers. Jockey Hayes incompetency in the saddle, however, brought about an unlucky defeat for him. The winner turned up in the admirably ridden Rose Queen, which was able to reverse her previous running with the favorite by a quick beginning, and, poaching a long lead on lier belated opponent in the stretch. As it was. Hayes dilatory tactics on the latter was the cause of his undoing, though at the end he was running two feet to the fillys one. Duke of Milan. Del Cruzador and Woodlander were hugh disappointments in the race, the Baldwin crack running absolutely last all the way. The condensed history of the Gebhard Handicap Is as follows: Year. Winner. Starter Holtman had unusually bad luck at the barrier in the first race with one horse. Bell Reed beating the others away by many lengths, followed by two divisions lengths apart and two horses absolutely left, including the heavily backed Belle of Iroquois. Thousands of race-goers, exasperated by his previous days poor work, proceeded to vent their displeasure loudly. A quick revulsion of feeling took place when a perfect start was effected in the very next race and, as, Holtmans work grew a better and better as the afternoon progressed, he left the track fully restored to favor by the fickle public. The notorious Al Koenigsberg, who Is both a bookmaker and horse owner on the local track, had another fight with Emil Herz during the morning in which he emerged with a disfigured countenance. It was a rough and tumble affair and took place outside the race track enclosure. Ko nigsberg is the man who was reported to the stewards of the jockey club last fall for using reprehensible language at the race course, in which he impugned the honesty of the judges who were acting at the time. In his capacity of a pool boy, he was once expelled from the Bay District track. H. T. Griffins horses will be shipped east next week.
