MONTREAL MEETING OPENS AUSPICIOUSLY Great Crowd in Attendance to View Fast and Well Contested Racing Montreal Que August 29 The autumn meeting of the Montreal Jockey Club began today under con ¬ ditions which augur well for its success Despite the counter attractions of a championship lacrosse match and a baseball game fully 7500 turned oilt to witness the racing at beautiful Blue Bonnets It was a gathering which included the elite of the province of Quebec many high officials in public life being present on the clubhouse lawns and veran ¬ dah The club did its share in the entertainment by providing an excellent program which included besides the Karl Grey Cup a handicap at a mile and ti furlong the Inaugural Handicap at six furlongs which brought out some good sprinters and a steeplechase over the twomile course The courseThe veteran Kentuckian Amos Turner provided the winner of the Earl Grey Clip Martin Doyle which led his competitors from ejid to end A ma ¬ jority of the races furnished interesting contests and all the winners were hailed with great enthusi ¬ asm asmIn In the absence of Frank Bryan who remained ab Baltimore to linisli up the meeting there John V Kyan acted is presiding judge while C J Fitz ¬ gerald directed matters from the stewards stand A standA number of stables arrived this morning from New York and Fort Erie sinipng them the strings of Thomas C McDowell James McLaughlin Edward Garrison and P Dunne Seven more carloads are due in the morning Sig morningSig Levy W A Porter Jack Atkin John Par jiell T Melnerney M L Hay man Joe Yeager and Wilton C Percy were among the arrivals from New York YorkSecretaries Secretaries W P Fraser of the Ontario Jockey Club and A It London of the Hamilton Jockey Club were present Anne McGee a twoyearold filly owne I hy Edward Corrigan is down with fever She is the only sick horse on the grounds
