During the twenty-live minutes the field was at the post there were many false breaks and Avonalis was always out in front. She took the lead soon after the Held finally got away nnd was never headed, winning by three lengths. There was a scandal in connection with the running of the Peruvian Derby, involving jockey Frank Gulturriz. who is said to have ridden on California tracks. It led to his arrest and that of other men. and the jockey was held in jail for five days and later ruled off for life. It was charged that Gulturriz fell off Oniuida. one of the favorites, purposely. He was handcuffed and taken to jail. Further investigation of the affair led to the arrest of Jlm Casella. trainer of Turf, the Derby winner, as well as jockey It. Diaz. The charge against Casclla and Diaz was that they had hatched a plot to get Guiturriz to fall off. Orquida belongs to Presidentelect Leguia of Peru and the race was regarded as a canter for him. When Guiturriz fell off there was a shout that it was no race and ru effort was made to have it run over, but the officials held the result should stand.
