; MONETARY RETURN OF EASTERN RACING: Enormous Falling Off In Winnings of Owners Over the New York Tracks. i From .some points of view the money yield of the New Yqrk racing field for 190S was not so bad, but in comparison with 1907 it was something to be viewed with sorrow by horsemen and lovers of racing in general. In 1907 the aggregate of money distributed among horse owners from the New York tracks was ,017,402. This year it was S1.5S2.S71. the falling off being the enormous sum of ,034,531. an almost appalling destruction of income to a body of men as worthy as any equal number engaged in any other pursuit than the turf. The falling off was general, no club escaping, and one. the Buffalo Racing Association, giving no meeting. Yet, the sum that was raced for was more than was bung up at all of the tracks of the United States thirty years ago and reallv ample for the uses of racing as a sport. It is only in the commercial side of racing that there is loss and it is a truth that racing, as an open-air diversion, has been too much dominated of late years by commercialism. Washington. Adams, Jefferson, Jackson and Clay were great Americans who delighted in racing, but it was as a sport and the idea that men should make their living by racing horses was not thought of in their days, nor, indeed, until of late years. It now seems that in some measure tlie sport must be taken back to its place as -a diversion, purely. It may be that the rude shock administered by Governor Hughes will in the long run prove beneficial in the way of forcing a reorganization of the racing fabric on another basis than that of dollars and cents. The following table shows in detail the aggregate of money won in 1907 and 1908, the minor meetings of the Maryland Hunt Clubs and at Jamestowii in 190S being included for convenience: Organization. 1907. 190S. It fell to a brilliant two-year-old to lead them all in money earned and a grand .three-year-old was hard after him in that line. Next, was the best four-year-old of the year and then came the crack two-year-old llllv of 190S. That quartette. Sir Martin. Fair Play. Ballot and Maskette would constitute rather a pleasing stable. Undefeated Colin was fifth In the winning list, sturdy King James was sixth and lleet Jack Atkin seventh, and Mr. Keenes best two-year-old Colt, Helmet, eighth, these being the only -winners of 0,000 or more.
