DEATH OF JEAN BEREAUD. Jean Bcreaud is dead. He was the leading winning two-year-old of 1S98. and a race horse of great merit. He was bred by Gideon Daly at their Holm-del Farm In New Jersey and was a sou of His Highness and the Sensation mare, Carrie C. As a two-year-old he won seven of his first eight races in unbroken succession in the colors lof Sydney Paget. Counsellor Wernberg beat him in his first race, which was at Morris Park. Then in order he won the National Stallion Race. Eclipse Stakes. Hudson Stakes, Great American Stakes, Tremont Stakes, Great Trial Stakes and the second half of the Double Event. After that ho trained off and was beaten in his other two races, but he was the best of his age and won 5,357. As a three-year-old he won the Withers Stakes and Belmont Stakes and. falling lame, was retired for the year. As a four-year-old he won the Brookdale Handicap, but was unsuccessful in his other races. In the stud his success has not been marked, but being a young horse, there is no telling what lie might have done had he lived longer. He died at Horse Haven Farm near Lexington. November 15. of acute indigestion.
