J , , i . 1 ! , NOTES OF THE TURF. Charles Ellison Is conlident that his speed marvel. Royal Tourist, will hang np a new American record for three-quarters of a mile before the winter is over. Early Wrights three-year-old gelding. Maltbie. of which great tilings were expected this winter, has been thrown out of training through a sudden attack of illness. John Bullman has been working hard to get into riding form for the Santa Anita season. Bu.llman is a masterly rider of two-year-olds and by no means a has been in jockeyship. Charles Rub, formerly well known in racing circles in the east, is seriously ill in the Post Graduate Hospital in New York, where he underwent an operation a few days ago. Jockey J. King, who has been riding at Oakland since the opening of the coast season, has signed a contract to ride for T. P. Childs. who will race his horses at Sauta Anita Park. Last week a record, was established by the "mu-tuels" at Maisons-Lallitte, France, when UC.901 francs for every ten Invested fell to the lot of those who supported the chances of Etheree. Taylor George has been showing some fast work over the andmta Anita track, only recently doing six furlongs in 1:13 j. Mintia, another from 11. T. OITutts barn, reeled off three-quarters in 1:1-14 under restraint at the end. Jockey Eddie Dugan, when his suspension expires January 1. will resume riding for S. C. Hildreth. to whom he is engaged until March. 1909. when lie will sail for England. Harry Payne Whitney will have first call on his services for one year beginning Mareli 15. Little remains of what was once the famous old Brighton Beach track. The field stand has been torn down and laborers arc busily engaged in ripping up the brick lawn which extended from the stand to the fence and on which many race-goers in the past witnessed stirring linishes. Sand and soil have been carted in such quantities that two streets, where formerly the steeplechase horses raced, are now nearly completed.
