He has brought his score to 112 against the 118 of Higgs, who has only put on a couple of points during the past week, a rate of progression that must be much accelerated ir he is not to lose his place to the young apprentice. Malier holds liis own well at the head of the list, and is now at 132. so that lie is tolerably sure to come out first at the final reckoning. Hughes 94 10 8 15 01 10.03 There is no more famous name or household word in the turf world than that of Sherwood, which for three or four generations now has been honorably associated with racing. On Sunday Mr. Thomas Sherwood, the popular veteran trainer, celebrated his seventieth birthday, and is, writes W. Lotinga in Throne and Country, enjoying perfect health: in tact, was present at Linglield the other day. and is as energetic as any man half his age. Sherwood Is the doven and Hie Adonis among present-day trainers, for he still controls the establishment known as The Downs. Epsom, where he was born and has lived in all his life. It is situated in the center of Epsom Downs, a few paces from the starting posts for the Derby and City and Suburban. A primitive but comfortable and excessively picturesque residence it is, the building that one can just recognize in the center of a clump of trees when, looking straight ahead from the stands. Mr. Sherwoods build and stature "would hardlv lead one to believe that, as a boy. he was a feather-weight jockey, in fact, rode Don Pedro, the winner of the Surrey and Middlesex Handicap at the now defunct Egham meeting, carrying 4st 1211.. for at that time the minimum imposts were less than is now the case.
