MOR52- AMERICANS SAIL FOR EUROPE. Steamer Minnetonka Takes Consignments from Haggin, Madden and Widener. New York. December 5. The steamer Minnetonka left here late Friday evening with a large consignment of thoroughbreds destined for England and Franey. Besides James 15. Haggins horses, which sire jnostly broodmares and weanlings, the shipment; was made up of John K. Maddens twenty-lvy mares from his Hamburg Place in Kentucky rvrul nine head of horses belonging to J. IS. Widener. The well-known Philadelphia horseman. The Haggin and Madden horses were to he in charge of Eugene Leigh, but that gentleman was compelled to- sail on the French line Thursday and leave the details of the big shipment to Ed Hughes nuil Robert Shannon. The latter, who will probably JooU after Maddens horses in France, is one of the youngest trainers in the business, but lie has had considerable success from the start. For a time lie was associated with Mr. Madden at his Hamburg Place In Kentucky and also did well with a small stable at New Orleans last winter. J. E. Wideners liorses were in charge of .Howard Lewis and are destined for France, where they will compete in the Mg steeplechases of that country next season. Lucien Lyne will leave in a few days for his home in Kentucky, hut will go back to Belgium ngain next season to ride for M. Ribaucourt. Al though Lyne went to that country somewhat late in the season, he made a very good showing, riding sixty-eight winners out of 195 mounts. W. L. Powers, who attended the recent thoroughbred sales in Kentucky, expressed himself as agree iibly surprised with the breeding conditions in this country. While many of the liorses have been sold out of Kentucky, small breeders have taken advantage of the low prices that prevailed and a number of good young mares that went under the hammer will only change to another blue grass farm. W. Lakeland has made a change at his breeding establishment, retiring the stallion Goldcrcst and breeding his mares to The Picket, winner of the American Derby and Brooklyn Handicap. Among the mares that have been bred to The Picket are Quesal. the dam of Electioneer, and Rose Ban, the dam of Question Mark. Erall Herz has returned from England and will leave in a few days for the coast, where he may liitv a few horses and race them during the winter. A. Molinelli has now taken up winter quarters at the Gravesend track. He had Royal Onvx and Woodwitch out for a little work the other day and both appear in the best of condition.
