DANDELION MEETS DEFEAT. IS OUTSTAYED BY MARK ANTONY II. IN THE VERNON SELLING STAKES. The Winner Given a Floral Wreath and Then Bid Up a Thousand Sale of the Rudolph Spreckels Horses, Los Angeles. Cal., Decemlier 5. Mark Antony II. won the Vernon Selling Stakes today at one mile in a sharp last sixteenth struggle next to the rail with Dandelion. The hitters failure to annex the stake to his owners credit was a sad disappointment to Sam Hihlreth and his many friends, who regarded the race as a .certainty for him. lift was always held at odds-on in the betting, but did not take kindly to the drying-out and dead track, faltering noticeably a sixteenth out just when he appeared to have Mark Antony II. lenten. The latter ran a smashing good race, stood Dandelions last 100-yards challenge with rare gameness and out stayed him resolutely. After the race the winner was crowned with a beautiful lloral wreath and then put up for sale. When Judge Cole asked for an advance he was nstounished when II. It. Brandt raised the horse from 1908.sh00 to ,000 in one bid. Cole had to ask twlee to Ik; sure he had caught Brandts bid correctly. U. F. tarman came through with the customary 5 advance and saved the gelding, but his part of the stake was almost cut in half. Mr. Brandt made the one bid and then walked coinnlacent ly away. The card throughout was excellent and was productive of a splendid afternoons sport. Today was cut-in day. twenty lxxks drawing positions. The crowd was large and enthusiastic and had much the lotter of the lookies on the days1 speculation. Jockey Treulwl was set down for ten davs bv starter Iloltnian for disobedience at the post in the, fifth raw. Tom iMaunlx got in this morning from the east with jockey McCahey. Charley Ilenshall. fresh from French Lick Springs, is among the latest to arrive. He will campaign :i stable of seven horses here this winter. The sale of Rudolph Spreckels Sobre Vista Stable in the paddock today by auction resulted as follows: Detector, to .T. A. Bennet 00 Provedore, to T. II. Boyle 1 San Olino. to J. It.
