St. Eltnwood was not called on until well into the backstretch, where he moved up quickly into a bin lead and appeared an easy winner when an eighth out. but tired badly in the final sixteenth, gradually carrying ltedgauntlet out, and barely won. Redgauntlct was pocketed next to the rail until well into the final quarter, where he moved up fast, finishing gamely on the outside of the others and almost got up. Varietes responded well to u hard hand ride in the final sixteenth and finished fast. Dav Star was pocketed all through the stretch and got through too late, but was going fast at the end. Nattie Bumppo finished with a great rush next to the rail. Captain Burnett and Phalanx were done for after going well for three-quarters. The winner was entered for S800: no bid. Vox Populi, in a pocket and badly cut off after passing the first turn, had to go to the outside for a clear course when entering the stretch, closed up ground rapidly when an eighth out, hilt tired badly in the last hundred yards. Black Mate was badly cut off next to the inside rail on the far turn, had to go around for a clear course when entering the stretch and finished with a rush. Prince of Castile, on the outside of the others in the final quarter, also finished with a great rush under punishment, nipping Teo Beach out. The latter tired only in the closing strides.
