MAGAZINE GETS AWAY AND WINS. Judge Hamilton After the Rough Riders Jockey Powers Kicked by a Fractious Horse. Los Angeles. Cal.. December 10. The engaging of jockey Archibald to ride Magazine by owner Carman in the fourth race today had a wonderful effect on the colts running and instead of being left at the post, as was the case with jockey G. Burns riding several days ago. he dashed off into a big lead when the barrier went up. He easily led by a wide margin until in the final sixteenth where Archibald, taking no chances with him when Vox Populi threatened, hand rode him to the wire, the colt winning by three-quarters of a length. Vox Populi, heavily backed, was undoubtedly best, but C. Jackson gave him a poor ride, getting him off poorly and having him badly pocketed to the stretch. When an eighth out. Vox Populi moved up fast, but was unable to overcome the early handicap. U. F. Carman won handsomely on Magazines victory, getting 4 J to 1 for his money. He gave a dinner to a number of intimate friends after the race. In the previous race Carman also won a big bet on his new purchase. St. Elmwood. but St. Elmwoods victory was lucky. Redgauntlet. which finished second, being the best. Judge Hamilton again had on his disciplining clothes today, lining jockey Page 00 for cutting across Lord of the Forest on Taylor George. The interference was hardly sufficient to warrant a disqualification, but Judge Hamilton is making every effort to stop rough and unfair riding, and is visiting summary punishment on nil offenders. Jockey Powers was kicked badlv on the arm while on Aucassin in the fifth race, and was unable to make his mount on Cobleskill in the sixth race, jockey Shilling being substituted. The betting was by far the heaviest of the week, the twenty-live liooks having the better or the days speculation. Isa Ham. who set the prices for the ring around New York before the Hart-Agnew bill was passed, arrived today and will be seen on the block at the next cut-in. Archie Zimmer will leave for San Francisco tonight with his stable. He claims the track is too hard here for bis horses, several of which are lame. He thinks they will show to better -advantage in the soft going at Oakland.
