CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY OAKS •i * Like the Kentucky Derby, the Kentucky Oaks was first riii in 1818 and. like the Derby, was then at the proper distance of a mile and a half. In its tii-t running it fell to the Vandal tilly. Viniagrette. and nexi to her was a very fine, but singularly unlucky filly, bv Australian, named Gyptis. It was generally her fate to finish second, no matter what her opposition. Among it- winners was Bd Cortigans Mmlesiv. which subsequently came up to Chicago and won the tirst American Derby.
