CONDENSED HISTORY Or THE METROPOLITAN HANDICAP 4. + From the date of its first running the Metropolitan Handicap has justly Iieen ranked as one of the chief features of American racing. It was at first a dash of a mile and an eighth and in its first year was con tested bv one of the greatest fields of grand race horses that ever met iu this country, the starters bring Tristan. 114 pounds; Tenny. 129; Clarendon. 107: Riley. 110: Senorita. 11.!: Ambulance. 10.",. and Tournament. 125. marvels of speed ami eourage every one of them. The event was made a mile dash in 1!I07 and for tlie first time was won by a three-year old. Voters success presaging the subsequent fame that was to .iccrue to him as a great race horse and a great sire of race horses of high class. Many famous racers have won the Metropolitan and it is a pleasure to observe that it is to be contested today bv horses worthy to rank witli those which have battled for its honois in previous years.
