PIMLICO MEETING CLOSES- GREAT ATTENDANCE WITNESSES EFFENDIS VICTORY IN THE PREAKNESS STAKES. Good Colt. Statesman. Breaks Down in the Race — Red River and St. Jeanne the Only Winning Favorites. Baltimore. Met, May 12. -It was a day full of sensation-,, this w indup of the Pilule o spring meeting. The Preakness Stakes, a revival of one of Baltimores oldest stakes, was won by a despised outsider. Statesman, a horse for which 920,099 wis refused early in tin spring, broke down in ; he race and will never race again and the hit. Washington Steeplechase was espial id by a jumper that was mid in the auddeck on Monday for 5. Enough excitement surely for one afternoon. The Preakaeas was the stellar attraction of the meeting ami Baltimore society and horse folk showed their interest in the event by turning out iu larger numbers than on any previous day of tlie meeting, with the exception perhaps of last Saturday. Fash ion Plate, which had been shipped over from New-York to start in tlie race, was tlie choice with the horsemen and public as well. The good reports of Us work at Bassnshcad Bay earned tor the colt many friends. The result proved the greatest kind of a surprise, the winner turning up in Kffendt, which ni.de a runaway allair of the race and won bv a length. Fashion Plate was the ope thai tarnished what contention there was. He dropped brto s 1 place BOSa after the start ami remained there throughout. Smith took the colt unnecessarily wide whil-rounding the far turn and this probably cost him the victory, for in the stretch his mount moved up with a game effort and at tie furlong post it appeared as if he might win. Effendi. however, hid a bit left and in tlie last sixteenth drew away again. Something happened to Statesman on tlie llrst turn, where there was a jam. aud tlie . ii diopped back. He labored along until well iu tip-homestretch, where he faltered and went to his: knees and •unseated Dugan. Statesman bobhied down to the judges stand on three legs and it was plainly evident tliit he was injured seriously. 11« was led to his stable with great difficulty, tin examination it was found thai the sesamoid hone. which is one of the smaller Nines in Hie fetl ... broke, which means that the colts racing day- lare ended. Tlie leg will lie plated In a cast ami every effort will be made to save him for breeding i.ni -poses. As soon as he is able to he moved le . i:! be transferred to W. S. DihTenderfers term in Marylaud. where he will spend tire remainder of his days. Red River and St. Jeanne were Hie winning cryolites. A special, made up of six carloads of horses, will leave here Friday night for Toronto. Secretary Eraser telegraphed the horse nice under no elrcani-stances to take a surplus supply of feed, as the quarantine laws recently passed bv tlie Canadian parliament would not admit of its entrance into the Dominion. It is said that this was done to prevent the spread of mouth disease, which was brought into Canada by the thoroughbreds last season. William Cartli has arranged for John E. Madden to use his rider. J. Mclntyrc. for the Belmont Park meeting. Mclntyrc left for New York tonight ami will have the mount on Favette in tlie Metropolitan Handicap tomorrow. Jockey Illncbcllffe goes to Norfolk to ride for Woods Garth during that meel ing. W. E. Walsh lias changed his plans about shipping to Toronto. He will instead send the black sprinter. Coon, back to Latonia.
