May 31. — The Seagram Cup. one of the annual fixtures of the Ontario Jockey Club meeting, was offered as an attraction at Woodbine this afternoon. Of the original named starters, live declined, while Ida Mav. Suileriiian and Meoaraker were added. The field was one of the best that has i ever gone to the post at Woodbine, aside from that which contested the Toronto Cup Saturday. The ace developed Into a stirring contest with the Mackenzie coll. Direct, getting up in the closing strides to win by a nose from Jack Barker. The latter made the pace throughout and ran a surprisingly good race, dimmer, the favorite, was carried wide on all the turn-: and. when the final test ciiine. quit. J. W. Colts Il saillaj showed a splendid performance in the jumping race, -coining from the rear in the last quarter to close a big gap and win easily from Dr. Back, The latter had plenty of ■peed but made a couple of bad landings at the tenth and last tumps, almost unseating his rider at the latter point. Terah proved all easy winner in the Vallev Karn Handicap. He finished with iiis usual brilliant stretch aprtat after being outpaced in the earlv stages. The attend. nice was again large and society was out in force on the clubhouse stand and lawns. Kour favorites and two weD-backed second choices won and the balance n the layers sheets again showed a deficit. Jockeys Goldstein and Rettlg each piloted two winners. CoOTthjad II. Smiths useful jumper. Ben Cole, will not start again this season. The horse was quite lame this morning hii.1 his owner has decided to shin him back to the farm ami use the tiring irons on his legs. He has bases of patching him up for next season. Trainer Douglas will take up two Creak horses lieloiiging to Mr. Smith and prepare them for steeplceliasing. One is Merrvman and the other a five year old maiden by Tourna meat, standing close to seventeen hands high. Ib-took the blue ribbon in the .lass for hunters at the Warrcuton and Madison Square horse shows last fall. There is an epidemic of sickness among the stables at WnuSljl It is a sort of fever. Twenty horses in the Seagram stable are down with It. ten in the Shields stable and all of Amos, Turpevs. A couple of J. W. Mavs showed evidence of ailing Ibis morning and he ib-cided to ship Immediately t- Montreal. His lot will leave for Blue Boiiucts to morrow night. On account of the illness of several horses in his string Albeit Simons has decided to remain at Woodbine until the opening of the Hamilton meet ing. Hurlocks last rase was so disappointing to Captain Iresgrave that he has decided to use her as a buck for the remainder of the season.
