■ NOTES OF THE TURF. There will be no steeplechaslng at the Empire City meeting. Bethlehem, a promising colt in William Lakelands string, has been down with fever at Gravesend. John E. Madden Is credited with the opinion that King James Is one of the best horses bred at Ham burg Place. Jockey Walter Miller lost no time in applying for a riding license upon his arrival in England, but UP to last reports it had not l een granted. The lameness which attended Horace E.s start at Gniveseiwl Saturday was due to his having grab bed and pulled off one of Iris front plates. Mark Boasberg. better known as Jack Sheehan. will be in control of the lictting privileges at the outlaw meeting scheduled to open at Dufferin Park. Toronto, today. Kyebright. the horse that E. W. Heffner purchased in California last winter, pulled up lame after a recent work-out at Sheepsbead Bay and is temporarily on the shelf. His ailment is not considered at all serious. Trainer John Wlialcn says that August Belmonts two-year-old. Starbottle. winner of the Great American Stakes at Gravesend Saturday, is one of the most nervous horses that he ever handled. Whalen does not regard him as a reliable proposition. The Empire City Racing Association is guaranteed against loss by the Owners and Breeders Association in the Empire City. Yonkers. Mount Vernon. Tarry town. Knickerbocker. Frivolity. Whirl and Arrow Stakes. Jockey Shilling, it is said, will not lie alknved to ride at Victoria. B. C. in conseouence of an objection lodged by R. L. Thomas, the Keaituckiau. who holds the hoys contract and whose services he left without notice and consent. Congressmen James and Rhlnock of Kentucky and Hetlin of Alabama yvere visitors at Gravesend Saturday. Mr. Rhinock. as is generally known, is heavily interested iu the Latonia race track. He and Mr. James are not infrequent patrons of the metropolitan races. Racing Is a new recreation with Mr. lietiiu. Rrother Jonathan, which broke down at Gravesend vvliile working for the Brooklyn Handicap, is not as badly oft as was supposed. There is something amiss wit h. the horses left hind ankle, but it is not Improbable that he may be seen under colors again. "Till I v Coulter, his oyvner. lias received an offer from abroad for Brother Jonathan. Cindy, the brown filly that liore the green and white lacket of Herman B. Duryea in the Criterion Stakes, is the first of the get of Irish Lad to appear under colors in this country. SJie is one of a string of five two-year-olds that .Simon Henley is training for Mr. Duryea. Cindy is a filly of nice size and fair proportions, out of the imported mare. Raben-stein. James H. McAvoy. the old-time horseman, who campaigned the Latonia Derby winner. Prince hfc-Clnrg. years ago. may have temporarily given up training for the tish business, but lie has not given up owning racers. A three-year old called Berkshire carried his colors at Now York Saturday. -lack GoldslKirough. trainer of the stables of Sam Doggctt and J. A. Rennet, is handling Berkshire for Mr. McAvoy.
