i . j 1 1 ! I , GOODWOOD MEETING BEGINS TODAY. Features of Marked Importance in Englands Greatest Midsummer Turf Gathering. Englands chief midsummer meeting and one only second to Ascot iu point of fashion and high repute, takes place this week amid picturesque surroundings at Goodwood. This course Is unique In that it is the property of and a part of the magnificent estate of the Duke of Richmond. The .money given is not on the lavish Ascot scale, but is liberal and some of the Goodwood stakes rank among the most important of each year. The meeting covers today, Wednesday. Thursday and Friday, being the limit length of any race meeting In England. Quite a number of the races to Imj run have closed recently, some at so near a date as July 20.- Most .of the principal stakes closed so far back that no noinl-. nations of our horses appear in them and the Americans will probably figure chiefly In the minor stakes referred to. The Gatwicke Stakes for three-year-olds, at a mile and a half, the Ham Stakes for two-year-olds at three-quarters of a mile and the Richmond Stakes for two-year-olds at the same distance are the main races of the first day. August Belmont is the only American owner concerned in any of them, being represented in the Richmond Stakes by his colt Hastv Pudding, by Hastings Teas Over. The Richmond Stakes has ,500 added, but the Gatwicke and the Ham are old-fashioned sweepstakes of 00 each, half forfeit, with no added money, owners thus running for their own money alone. The ,000 Goodwood Plate for three-year-olds and over, . at two miles, the Sussex Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile and the Lavant Stakes for twO-year-olds at five furlongs are the big races of Wednesday. The Goodwood Plate Is a handicap for which weights were announced July 15. It has several American nomlna-. tions, but since their allotments of weight are as yet unknown here no suggestion of their prospects, can be made iniderstaiidingly. Minoru is in the Sussex Stakes aud the probable winner. Mr. Belmonts Ballot Bred. Mr. Carrolls Troubled Waters and Torchbearer, Mr. Keenes Black Satin and three bf-Mr. Whitneys unnamed two-year-olds are In the Lavant Stakes. . The famous Goodwood Cup at two miles and a half: will be run Thursday. The older American horses sent over to England have done so poorly In their racing this venr that It is doubtful if any of those nominated to the Cup will be started. The other leading races of the day are the Rous Memorial Stakes for two-year-olds at three-quarters and the Prince of Wales Stakes, also for two-year-olds at three-quarters. Perla. Rochester, Lemberg and Scotch Gift are among the good ones in the Rous Memorial, and Lord Roseberys .Neil Gow appears to have the Prince of Wales Stakes at bis. mercy., American owners are not represented in either event. The ,000 Gordon Stakes for three-year-olds at a mile, the Nassau Stakes for three-year-old fillies at a mile and a half, and the Molecomb Stakes for two-vear-olds at three-quarters of a mile are the big races of Friday, the closing day. Some very good threi-vear-olds are in the Gordon Stakes, including Prlneesse de Galles. Great Peter. Glasgcrion and Phaleron. Mr. Belmonts Doncourt. Mr. Carroll s Truckee. Mr. Keenes Infatuation. Mr. Whitney s Irish Lad Xela filly, Hamburg Yorkville Belle colt a id Top o the Morning, and Mr. Hitchcocks Wyoming are in the Molecomb Stakes, with Top o the Morning appearing to have a good chance to win. No Americans are in the Nassau Stakes. " Of the stakes closed recently the Stewards Cup. with ,500 added, to be run today, at tkree-quar-t.-rs: the Drayton Stakes at seven furlongs, with 500 added, to be run Thursday, and the Chesterfield Cup. with ,000 added, at a mile and a quarter and to be run Friday, are usually contested by big fields of cracks and are all provocative of heavy betting, the Stewards Cup rivaling the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot In that respect, except in the matter of ante-post betting.
