GAFFNEY FAR FROM DISCOURAGED. New York. July 20. That James E. Gaffney, Charles F. Murphys brother-in-law, intends to remain ou the turf for some time to come is indicated by the fact that lie has registered his colors "for life." Mr. Gaffney so far has not enjoyed the looked-for success in the possession of winners. When he started off by securing the filly Julia Powel for ,500 the future seemed bright for him. But Julia Powel was so badly injured by a fall at Sheepshead Bay that she had to be destroyed. Mr. Gaffnev meanwhile paid 0,000 for Alfred Noble, which proceeded to win a race for the former alderman, but whose defeat by Maltbie in the Empire City Handicap was a bitter disappointment. Then Mr. Gaffney paid stiff prices for Dr. Barkley aud Louise S., only to see them badly beaten when they ran in his colors. But the Tammany man is not In the least discouraged. He says he cannot expect to secure a winning stable in a hurry aud that he intends to take his time. He is willing to buy good horses and will pay well for them. His is a purely sKrtiug proposition, by the way, for he is not a big bettor. He says he enjoys recreation and needs plenty of outdoor life, so that the. ownership of a stable of race horses appeals to him more than anything else. Mr. Gaffney has empowered trainer Frank Weir to make purchases whenever he thinks best.
