: . : : 1 ONE Or OUR CRACK TWO-YEAR-OLDS AND UNBEATEN IN NEW YORK RACING - C. L. HARRISONS B. C, 2, WALDO, BY PLANUDES SALAMA. For all that anyone knows now Waldo may p5v into winter quarters with the fame of being the best two-year-old of 1000. It would not have occurred to the patrons of the Oakland race track, where he made his debut, to view him in that light, lie tirst started in a purse race of a half mile at Oakland. March 25, and was well backed, but ran unplaced to Kiang, Gilpy and Salian. He did better in his next race, which was tlie Gebhard Handicap. April 3. ITyiug Squirrel, 122 pounds, was first: Glennadeane, 103 pounds, second, and Waldo. 07 pounds, third, thirteen others finishing behind the three, of which all but one was given more weight than Waldo. April S he won a purse race, with Harry Grothe second and Gelico third, and ran a half-mile in -18,1, with 112 pouuds up. April 14 he was unplaced to Penn. Quality Street and Pretend in a dash of four and a half furlongs, run in 544. These four races were all run at Oakland, and it would have taxed superhuman wisdom to deduce from them an unbeaten record over the New York tracks in good company. Yet such is Waldos record after being brought east. It was simply a case, not infrequent, of a good horse developing slowly. Taken to Xew York he made his first eastern start at Belmont Park, May lo, In the Juvenile Stakes, at five furlongs. !!d, at a long price, won by a half length from John L. Maddens supposed crack. Newmarket. Angerona was third, and Anavri, Rocky OBrien, Dullcare, Glopper and Shannon ran unplaced. Time. ... June 2. at the same track. Jie won tlie Laureate stakes-defeating Big Stick. Radium Star. Dullcare and Hiberniea at live furlongs in 1:01. cantering. Next lie won the Manhanset Stakes, at Gravesend. June 12, and, giving away much weight, ran awav from Dullcare. Angerona, Jacquelina. Charlie Har-grave. and OiitH.st. at five and a half furlongs, in 1:0, J, and carrying 122 pounds. His last start was in the Iremont Stakes, at Gravesend. June 10. over the about three-quarters course. He carried 121 1 pounds and won easily by two lengths in 1:118. Dulleare. Ho was second: Glennadeane. 112, third; Starbottlo and Rrushhroom ran unplaced. It was decided that Waldo had now done enough to entitle him to a rest, and he has been saved for the Saratoga meeting, where be is in the Flash Stakes, Saratoga Special and United States Hotel Stakes. His record to date is as follows: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. 1000. 2 S 5 0 1 2 ,415 v,itt,. tdLttL i Voltigenr. fGalopin Bldgway. f St. Simon. . . ..
