GREAT SOUTH AMERICAN STUD FARMS. Cyllene and Polar Star Thriving in Their New Home Near Buenos Ayres. Racing and breeding the thoroughbred is . not widely diffused through Argentina and is mainly confined to Buenos Ayres and its vicinity, but there both lines are in a remarkable state of development, eonceruinc which an English traveler, with an Englishmans love of the thoroughbred, wrote recently to an English turf newspaper: "I spent a week in the Argentine one of the llnest countries on the face of the earth. My friend, Mr. Paats, who was over here last summer, met me at Buenos Ayres. He has the management of the great Ojo de Agua Stud, 300 miles away, within about thirty miles of the coast and on the Great Southern Railway. We pro eeoded thither straightway, for I was naturally niixious to see how Cyllene and Polar Star were progressing having been instrumental in shipping them out to the Argentine. The Ojo de Agua Stud Is a magnltlcent property, covering 0,000 acres. The land is divided into paddocks, which vary in size from tifty to .TOO acres, so you will understand there is not much erowdii.g. There are about 200 boxes for the mares and yearlings, all of which are fitted tip in the best style. I found Cyllene and Polar Star as happy as possible amid their new surroundings. They had just finished the season. Cyllene had had thirty-five and Polar Star thirty mares. These lists were bigger than had been Intended, but the deatli of Kendal upset the calculations of. the management. However, both horses were looking extraordinarily well. Perhaps I was most struck with the wonderful way in which Polar Star has developed. Without losing any of the beautiful quality which always distinguished him, he has acquired great substance, and Is now almost as massive as Cyllene. They are both great favorites with all who have seen them since they landed in Argentina. Cyllenes reputation has not. of course, been lessened by the triumph of his son Minora In the Derby recently, and there is every reason to believe that he will be a conspicuous success in South America. Nor is Polar Star likely to be any the less so. ; In all, there are ninety-eight broodmares at the Ojo de Agua Stud. "Among the yearlings at this establishment there are twenty-five by Pietermaritzburg, which : died eighteen months ago; Cyllene was bought for 23,- 000 to take his place. Ten of the youngsters are eolts. and as a batch they are the most wonderful 1 ever saw. Tho majority of the dams are daughters ,of Gay Hermit, which may almost be said to. have been the foundation of the fortunes of the Ojo de Agua Stud. There are forty of his mares there today and about thirty by Kendal. 1 1 am inclined to think that the best of the .yearlings I saw was a. superb colt by Kendal, out of Perdlta, by Cyllene. out of Lady Yardley. the dam of Disraeli. There have been some wonderful sales of yearlings In the Argentine in recent years, but I shall be surprised if the one to be held this summer does not set up a new and amazing record. The lots. from Ojo de Agua will number forty. Those not by Kendal and Pietermaritzburg are by Stiletto. -by Beau-desert, out of Maud Victoria. "Then I proceeded to Mr. Unzues stud at San Jacinto. This is situated alout eighty miles from Buenos Ayres and is another great establishment. There I saw Val dOr and Bat. Mr. Uuzue has some magnificent yearlings by Val dOr and also eight by Ajax. Most of them are In the neighborhood of sixteen hands. Incredible as the figure may seem. They are splendidly grown, with tine, strong limbs. If appearances count for anything, they are .sure to make good. race horses. I also saw a number of yearlings by Jardy. which belongs to Carlos Luro, whose stud is the Haras Naclonal. close to Buenos Ayres. They are very good. Indeed, and .have much more substance than I expected to And tbem possessing. I may say that IhMi at. Mr. Unzues stud and at Ojo de Agua several mares have recently been bred to English time. The intention Is to send the produce to England to race, and they are to Ik entered in many, of our most Important events. It will be -interesting to see what the outcome of this scheme will be. Very possibly it is destined to have far-reaching results."
