i DIAGRAM OF THE NOTED SARATOGA RACE COURSE : , . .The first race meeting over the Saratoga track took place in 14. Very little racing had taken place while the Civil Var was in progress, but, despite its tremendous and overshadowing Influence Leonard Jerome, . It. Travers, John Hunter and some other choice spirits of the times who loved radii" and th" running horse, had a mile track constructed at "The Springs" and brought off quite a successful meetln for those days. It was a mile track of the regulation elliptical shape and was weed over without change" through various managements until W. C. AVhitncy, in partnership with those who now control the trick t.x.k it over from G. Walbaum in 1001 and. buying some adjacent land, remodeled the place completed as to tracks and buildings. Instead of a single mile track It now has a main track of a mile and an eighth with an inside track for training and. inside of that, a steeplechase course. It aLo has a chute for dashed of seven furlongs and another for mile races. The latter leads from the right of the grandstand into fie main track in a way that cuts out the first turn from the homestretch with its troublesome and always dangerous crowding. The diagram here published .shows the details of the course aud its surroundings: I I If SAfTATOQA TiACE-TFIACK I I r T BARATv;A$,ri"OG.r J 111 I I jrj NSJT--- TiH.T"" I -Jfl
