STAKE TO PRINCE IMPERIAL YOUNGSTER SHOWS MARKED IMPROVEMENT OVER PREVIOUS ESSAYS. Talk of Inquiry Follows Decision of Principal Feature at Windsor: Old Honesty Poorly Handled in Handicap, Detroit, Mich., August 11. The results of todays feature races, the Detroit Stakes for two-year-olds, and a handicap at a mile aiid a sixteenth, occasioned adverse criticism on account of the sudden improvement shown by the winners. The Detroit Stakes winner was Prince Imperial. He triumphed in superior fashion over good opposition. Eva Tanguav was second, just beating English Esther, with Lady Sybil, the hitters stable companion, only a nose, away. Prince Imperial was subjected to much early interference and was forced to turn wide into the stretch, but. despite this, won commandiiigly. On the occasion of his preceding start, ridden bv jockey Hnfnagel. Prince Imperial had been taken out of contention from the start and was restrained throughout. -Hnfnagel was before the judges lie-cause of his weird ride, but was dismissed with a sharp caution. In view of the colts decided1 improvement it is possible that there will be further judicial inquiry into his recent running. The condensed history of the- Detroit Selling Stakes is given below: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Time. 1005 Ohiyesa 113 D. Austin. .,150 1:01 1005 Charlie Gilbert. . .114 J. Foley 1.150 1:00 1007 Anoura 09 G. Swain... 1.150 1:01 100SRlchard Reed ...100 V. Powers.. 1.150 1:00? 1009 Prince Imperial. .10S Mentry . . S50 1:00 Distance increased from 5 to 5 1-2 furlongs. The handicap was also unsatisfactory and jockey Rettig. who rode Old .Honesty, was held to blame for his defeat by Crania. Old Honesty was considered one of the best bettiug propositions of the afternoon and witli intelligent handling would have won off by himself. Kettig took him to the front soon after the start and seemed to have the race well in hand until the stretch turn was reached, where he pulled away from the inner rail and allowed Davis, on Grania, to dash by him and win out by a scant length. Kettig is riding in extremely had form and has been consistently making a poor showing of late on horses that looked to have good chances. The censure that Kettig came in for on account of his novice-like handling of Old Honefk was entirely merited. Threatening weather did not deter a big Crowd from witnessing the racing, which was in the main interesting. The winners in all the races were extensively supported and the layers came in for a scorching. Several run-ups enlivened proceedings. The first" came when Topsy Kobinson won. She was entered for 00 and was bid up to ,200 by Guy Gray. She was retained by the customary advance. K. L. Thomas County Clerk, winner of the closing race, was iu for 00, and Lou Marion, acting for the St. James Stable, made a bid of ,000 but failed to get him. This is an echo of the controversy between Messrs. Thomas and Wheatcroft. Maiden jockeys disported themselves In the opener and honors went to the diminutive Booth, astride -Mozart, which won in a close finish with Loyal Maid and General Marelmiont. The latter was much the best, but crowding nearly caused him to fall at the half mile post. Lady Hill was the medium of one of the biggest plunges of the season. It was reported that commissions were placed all over the country. She gave her backers no anxiety, going into the lead at the start and remaining there. Amos Turney tocik down his first purse in a long time when Apologize beat a mediocre band in the sixtli race. W. II. Gleason. who is interested in the Bucna Vista track at. Salt Lake City, where a. thirty days meeting will begin September 18. circulated among the owners today outlining the plans. Several owners will ship there from here. Mr. Gleason Is enthusiastic over the .prospects for Utah racing, and is of the opinion that the siiort will thrive there. Chicosa, which finished second in- the sixth race, was badly cut down. The Toronto fall stakes will close tomorrow. Entries may be made with Fred Gerhardy at Windsor. Edward Corrigan was among the visitors today. He stated that his wife is steadily regaining her health. Sam Louis arrived today from Kansas City.
