American owners have patronized the Epsom Oaks of 1911 liberally. In addition, English purchasers of American yearlings at sales on this side have nominated several of them to tlie Oaks and. Mr. Vanderbilt has sent In four entries from France. Nominations made in the United States and mailed over from New York were the following: Ogden M. Bishops ch. f, by Adam Virgin Soil W. A. Cassels blk. f. by Watercress Miss Dru-sella. F. Cobbs b. f. by Star Ruby Fast Black. J. B. Joels ch. f. by Watercress Janice. T. B. Millers ch. f. by Star Ruby Dartie. The race closed July 20 with 27S entries, of which twenty-seven are American-bred, almost one-tenth of the whole. Mr. Whitneys fine mare. Stamina, looks extremely well and is evidently quite speedy, but she seems to have acquired notions averse to doing her best since being brought over here. She seemingly resents being driven to such an extent that the moment a jockey moves on her and goes to pick up his whin she immediately throws up the sponge. Martin, therefore, had to sit and suffer on her In the Nottingham Handicap recentlv. Had he pressed her harder it is her trainers belief that she would have lieen beaten more than the length and a half which separated her from Land League. In a recent gallop on Newmarket Heath, when being roused and iiard ridden by Martin, she almost pulled up with him. The stewards of the Jockey Club have approved of plans for a new race course at Paisley. Scotland, in place of the present track, which is considered unsafe. The new course Is situated two and. a half miles north of the town, but only three-quarters of ; a mile from nouston Station, and is on land owned ! by J. X Cunninghame of Craigends. The cours.i will be one mile and a quarter In circumference, and there will be a special six furlongs straight. The cost is estimated at over 5,000. and the track will be ready in 1912. Major Eustace Loder has had the misfortune to lose the sire. Laveno, which died on Thursday night at his stud in Ireland from an attack of colic. Bv Bend Or, out of Napoli. Laveno was bred by J. II. Houldsworth in 1S92. He did not run as a two-year-old, commencing his turf career by running second to Kirkconnel in the Two Thousand Guineas. He then ran unplaced In the Derby, won by Sir VIsto. but subsequently won the Jockey Club Stakes of 0,000 beating None the. Wiser. Ladas. Sir Visto and a good field, and the Champion Stakes. In the following year he ran four times without success, being unplaced behind St. Frusquin and Persimmon in tlie Princess of Wales Stakes of 0,000; second, giving twenty-five pounds, to Bellevin in the Prince Edward Handicap at Manchester: third to Persimmon and Sir Visto in the Jockey Club Stakes of 0,000. and unplaced behind Bay Ronald in the Limekiln Stakes. After three unsuccessful efforts in the following season, the best of which was a second to Diakka in tlie Duke of York Stakes, he retired from tlie race course. He was the sire of Uninsured, winner of the Lincolnshire Handicap in 1901. Galvani. .which has always been considered in the front rank, and Valens. which also appears likely to make a name for himself, Tlie latter was fourth in tlie Derby this year. Amongst Lavenos other winners perhaps tlie best were .Laveuse. Lady Honora. Nutwith. Rarer Sort and Veneration II. Allison of the Sportsman prints his strong notion about the St. I.eger run September 8 at Doncaster. and for which Bayardo is a strong favorite. He writes: "There is the bare possibility of an unknown quantity like Bachelors Double effecting a surprise, but tills will not alarm backers of Bayardo. though the Irish colt is likely to beat more than beat him. Valens will not stay the course, and over no course has he a chance against the favorite. Bomba is a probable starter, but will be outclassed, and I know of no reason why William the Fourth should beat Louviers. Princesse de Galles is simply not good enough, though I fancy she can stay the distance well enough on a flat course where no uphill effort is needed in the last mile. If I were to select the winner now and two for places. I should take Bayardo, first; Louviers, second, and Minoru. third. Up till the end of July Rabelais easily heads the list of winning stallions on the flat in France, witli 53,440 to his credit. Then comes another iEnglish-bred horse, Childwick. 08,400; followed by the French Ajax. 1909.sh3,390. and American Halraa. 2.-170. W. K. Vanderbilt is once more the most successful owner, having won 09,975. and Baron Maurice de Rothschild has secured 41,725. For years George Stern, lie best jockey in France, and one of tlie most able horsemen in the world, has headed the jockev list, but he is now only fifth with fiftv-seven wins to his credit, and up till August 7 J. Cliilds comes out on top. having ridden sixty-nine winners out of 292 mounts. For a long time this season Barat. who now ties with C. Childs for second place, each having ridden sixty-five winners, was tlie most successful rider in France, and he is the first pure-bred Frenchman to ever occupy the position since the days when racing was virtually started there bv Lord Henry Seymonr. and no other French, rider has ever been on the Grand Prix de Paris winner, as he was this year. Little Maurice Barat is now only nineteen years of age. and., always crazv to be a iockey. he used as a child of eight to ride at the old Hippodrome in some equestrienne performance. His mother was for years a washerwoman at La Villette. but ince her boys success as a jockey lias given up this business.
