Gaffney. fill his engagement in. the Futurity. Hermls. the stallion which Mr. Ziegler declared is not for sale at any: price, in reply to Tom Welshs Inquiry, has always been the apple of Mr. Zieglers eye. He bought him us a twQ-year-old at Latonia from Oofs Bros. for. ,300 ami sold him as. a three-year-ohl at Saratoga for 5,000 to L. V. Bell, in whoso colors he won the Travers Stakes the same day. From L. V. Bell the horse went, to E. R. Thomas; at a reputed price of 1909.sh0,000. hut 3,000 Is said to be what he actually brought. While owned by Thomas he. was retired to, the stud, and when the tide: in Thomas fortunes turned and the magnificent Btud he had collected was sold through a process of law. Sir. Ziegler sent Charles nughes on to buy Hermis.. if possible, and to give any sum he deemed reasonable. Mr. Hughes went on and secured Her-: mis for the paltry sum of 00. There are some coming, two-year-olds by Hermis now. being broken and tried, and .the offer for the .stallion coming from a man. like Welsh makes it look as if some of them might have shown pretty well. Mr Ziegler always regretted having parted with illermis. and now that he has him back he will hold onto him unless the offers reach such a Bum that he ,can not afford to retain him.
