RACING STATISTICS OF THE YEAR 1909 During the course of the year which has just come to a close the sum of 3140095 was distributed in slakes and purses among owners who raced their horses over the recognized tracks of the United States the Dominion of Canada and Mexico While this represented a decrease of 1204990 from the distribution of 1908 still the showinir was decidedly better than was anticipated at the beginning of 1909 when the turf outlook was any tiling but bright as a consequence of the uncertainty created by hostile legislation in various sections of this country The passing of the year brought with it developments indicating that tlie crisis in tlie affairs of the turf has been weathered and that the great sport of racing is once more well on the way to renewed prosperity of an enduring character Even reduced as it has been by the stress of circum ¬ stances the aggregate distribution to the owners of thoroughbreds in America continues in excess of the amount annually distributed among owners in Kngland which is generally regarded as the greatest racing country In the world and where the turf is on i foundation as enduring as tlie Kock of Gibraltar It is piobable that the low ebb in American distribution lias been reached and that there will IK a gradual re ¬ turn to the affluent conditions of the golden period immediately preceding the recent wave of represslonary legislation that wiped so many racing associations out of existence existenceIn In summing up the practical results of the year n striking feature Is the wonderfully formful racing that marked the conduct of the sport at Montreal where during the thirteen days of the summer meet ¬ ing from June 5 to June 19 the extraordinary percentage of 58 was attained by winning favorites This was the best record of the year in that particular Tlie general average of successful first choices through ¬ out tlie country was 47 which is considerably above normal The record of IJtOS was to and for 1907 it was 39 The fall meeting at Churchill Downs where large and unwieldy fields of lowclass selling plafers burnished the racing represents the extreme in the matter of low percentage its showing being 28 The following tabulation gives in a general way the statistics of 1909 Track and Dates Oakland Jan 1April 17 9 ° 308790 204 Sauia Anita Park Jan 1April 17 II IILexington Lexington April 2May
