AMERICAN MARES FOE MEXICO Shipment to Leave Kentucky Today Magnificent i Course Constructed at Mexican Capital CapitalLexington Lexington Ky January 1 Dr Henry Casey will tomorrow ship from Danville to the City of Mexico twenty thoroughbred mares one of which he hopes will prove the mother of the winner of the Mexi ¬ can Derby in 1015 Dr Casey is a native Ken tuckian and for a number of years made his home at Danville Something over a year ago he removed to the City of Mexico and has established himself profitably in the practice of his profession as a veterinary surgeon At a meeting a few weeks ago of a number of Mexican gentlemen who are inter ¬ ested in the development of the thoroughbred IB Mexico ami In the future of racing in that country disappointment over the quality and nonproducliye ness of the mares that had been brought into Mexico from the United States by Mexican dealers was ex ¬ pressed Dr Casey said that the mares that had come under his observation were In no wise rep ¬ resentative American mares that they were in real ¬ ity culls of the poorest sort and that they had been picked up for little or nothing around Lexington and shipped into Mexico with an idea of profit alone Dr Casey told these gentlemen that wellbred mares in foal to good sires could be purchased in the blue grass region for an average sum 4hat would justify the expense of their shipment to Mexico with a view to selling them to Mexican ranchmen and having them drop their foals on Mexicon soil A few days later a company of these gentlemen came to Dr Casey asking him to accept a commission to conn to Kentucky and buy twenty of the best mares ob ¬ tainable for a sum of money that they placed in his bauds baudsThe The Mexican government as is generally known has apportioned 2jUOO annually for twenty years to be added to a race to be known as the Mexican Derby said Dr Casey This race is to have its first running at the magnificent new course of the Mexican Jockey Club on September 1C next To the initial running of tlie Mexican Derby horses bred in all countries were eligible but future races for the rich prize are to be confined to horses foaled in Mexico It has been found that there are not enough Mexican horses and that there must be a wider range of interest in breeding them i Mexico Tin twenty mares I have collected hen ire to be sold regardless of the idea of making any profit In dol ¬ lars but with the hope that their buyers will enter their foals in the Derby and that interest generally in racing and breeding will be stimulated It is a small start I know but we feel that it is in the right direction and that good results will come of it itAmong Among the mares In Dr Caseys shipment are Oral by Order Hannah Port by Ilermence Gussie Owens by W Johnson Oyezpa by Meddler Flu ella by Flying Dutchman Escalera bv Ksher Miss Kdd by Ksher Tot ness by Sir Dixon Minty Gore by Jim Gore Ktheline bv Charaxiis Arab Belle by Watercress and Isoline by Clieveden Tlie mares are in charge of Robert Rowland a professional colored plater of race horses Rowland will remain in the City of Mexico Dr Casev having assured him of the need of a good man of his craft there Speaking thereSpeaking of tlie Mexican Jockey Clubs new racing plant Dr Casey said It is the finest race course in North America even more magnificent than Bcl mont Park It lies between the heart of the city and the Chaptiltepec the presidents palace It is not more than IKi minutes walk from the beart of the city The grandstand is an immense structure of steel and stone and the stables and all appoint ¬ ments are strictly up to date The course is a mile and a half eliptic with a water pipe encircling It as a rail From this pipe the course is sprinkled at will The infield contains a steeplechase course and polo grounds I am certain that there Is a great future for racing in Mexico but of course It is going to take time to develop the interest of the people Once they bae a taste of highclass racing tliey will never abandon It
