Powers" sii|»erb ride had Uillch In iln Willi Ilie outcome, although there is no denying tl.al Poll* ran a smashing good race. He was easily placid in the early running. res|M»nih d with Cleat courage when called on and won with something in reserve. The disapi ointnient of the race was Fauntleroy. whose showing was extremely poor. Fauiilh-roy was a distant trailer all the way and finished last and Ix-ati-u off. At no time during the rtiuuiug was he even prominent and his had race led to rilUlors that the cult had been poisoned. These stories. Iiou.v.r. arc without foundation. The gen eral impression is that trainer McLaughlin was forced to give the i-olt too hurried a preparation, with th - result thai his candidate, like Boca Grande, trained otf. The start was a good one. the tield leaving the harrier well aligned. Pulka was tirst to show in tin- had and. closely accompanied hy l.othario. he set out to make a killing pace, with the result that hotli soon raced themselves into exhaustion. At the lirsi turn, where the held was luiucl.eil. Powers cut across to the inside with Polls, saving much ground, while Sager was carried wide. On the backst retch Powers dropped Polls in behind the leaders and not until after they had passed the half mile ground did he make a move. At this point he took Polls around the leaders and dashed to the front rounding the far turn. Entering the homestretch. Polls had a safe lead, •with the others tiack of him driving hard. Towards tin- vnd Sager moved up with a final challenge, only to weaken in tin- cUwing strides. This left Polls to draw away to win hy a couple of lengths. The poorly ridden Martinez was a fast cl.ising third. beaten n length and a half for the place. llavis iiistmctioiis evidently were to rate along with Faunt-Jerov. for lie took Martinez hack in the earlv stages and kept close to tin- M.l.aughliu colt. The result was that he dropped so completely out of the race in the first six furlongs that when he anally decided it was time to make his move, the disadvantage was too much to overcome. .Martinez resixuided with great courage when called on and. gaining steadily on the leaders, finished with a good hurst of speed. The manner in which Martinez responded in the last three furlongs made it plainly evident that he would lnive lieeri a s. ; ions factor had be been ridden with hotter judgment. Pulka and Lothario l oth unit in the Mrclcl:. hut at tluit they both oiitstaved Fauntleroy. faaaea Mcl-aiighliu was much disapisiinted with liis i lts showing.
