, WOODBINE PARK IN FINE CONDITION. Preparations Proceeding for Opening of Canadian Season — Something of Stock at Brookdale Farm. Toronto. Ont.. Xlay .!. — A little fine weather now and things will commence to boom at the Woodbine. There are a number of high-class thoroughbreds on the ground already. Xlost of the big Canadian stables are here, while the horses from across the line will continue to arrive almost every day from now until the opening. It is quite evident that the curtailing of the length of the meetings on the Canadian circuit will not have a serious effect upon the game here. There may be a scarcity of cheap horses, but the big purses, both stakes and over night events, are certain to attract horses of class. The management of the Ontario Jockey Club bus been al work all spring on the course, grounds and stands and Woodbine Park was never in better condition. The beautiful infield is as well kept as a private lawn, while a lavish use of paint has brightened everything. In the paddock a railing has been erected around the horse walk which will do away with confusion that existed there hertofore. Of the original stock of thoroughbreds at Brook-dale Farm not a single representative remains at Barrie. No trace of the blood of the horses that John Dynictit trained on the hills of Orkney a generation ago is now to be found at the Dyment place on the shores of Kempenfeldt Day. The tribe of King Pobs. Aunt Alices. .Maggie Xlays and Lucy I.ightfoots. tracing back to unknown or doubtful sources, had to give way under the relentless rule of the survival oi the fittest. They could not meet the conditions nor withstand the competition. Kveu of what may be called the second source of supply, which took their places, the draft of stock imported from Kngland a dozen years ago. only one can now be traced, the Limestone mare. Galena, through her daughter. Flying Bess. Competition is fiercer now-rdays and to be equal to the best wus the motive that impelled the Xlessis. Dyment to replace the old stock with stallions and mares of fashionable breeding and of merit demonstrated by achievement. The breeding establishment is now headed by the only-son of the mighty Flying Fox in America. Red Fox. the premier at Brookdale. was brought over from Kngland last fall and has as a companion in the stud the Order horse. Tongorder. a good winner when he curried his present owners racing colors. The Tongorders that are already in evidence are exceedingly creditable to his promise as a sire and. although many famous sires are represented among the young stock at the farm, those of Tongorders progeny ask nothing in comparison in tlin mailer of size and shapeliness. The yearling. Rnstt Order. and the colt foal from Grandma II. cannot well be surpassed anywhere. Trainer Dyment has no Kings Platers for this year and not much iu sight for next season, but a glance at the list of yearlings and a look over them in the paddock indicate the Barrie establishment as likely to be of tremendous ini-IMirtance in the disposition of the honors among province-bred race horses when this material conns to the age of usefulness. Such noted horses as Sain. Ccsarion. Sir Dixon. Nasturtium and Stalwart are represented among the youngsters that will soon be carrying the orange and green jacket. The mares, too. ire of distinguished and successful families. Elf. the dam of Broomstick ; Cold Wave, the dam of Star Wave: Clurmie. hulf-sister to Ben Brush, und others bv Hanover. Hamburg. Royul Hampton. Riley. Sir Dixon and Ben Brush are not the kind found on every farm and if there is anything iu breeding the enterprise of the owners of Brookdale is sure to be richly rewarded.
