Gets Off in Front and Is Able to Retain Advantage Throughout — Al Muller Wins Handicap in Which Mettie Bereaud Is Disappointment. iAiuisville. Ky.. May 19. — La I Mexican won the valuable Bashtord Manor Stakes, which netted the winner .MK». in handy fashion at Churchill Dowus today, with some of the best of tin- juvenile colts racing here be.iind him. His victory, however, was by no means clear cut. as the start was a bad oue aud accounted for the failure ot some of the starters to make a kettar showing. La U Mexicau got away in the forward division and. leading throughout, scored with something in reserve. Jack Deniuau finished second and Incision third. Thirteen went to the post for the race and the starter and his-assistants had their troubles trying to keep the unruly riders and horses in some semblance of align-! ment. When the break came, about half of the field were unprepared and those off in the second division lost all chance. J. T. Williams Governor Gray, declared by some smart horsemen to be a better colt than Rains Horn, had no opportunity to show to advantage. Surprises during the afternoon were frequent, favorites going down to defeat in all the races. Some of the winners came from the rank of the out-[ siders and gave their backers big returns. Foursomes victory in the third race was wholly unexpected. Like La 0 Mexicau, she was aided considerably by more than a fair share of racing luck. Had Longhand been away on even terms with her. the outi-ome would have been reversed. Mettie Bereaud was the disappointment in the handicap. On her showing in a former start when she defeated Wintergreen and other fast sprinters and established a track record, she was expected to show well in todays race. Al Muller carried her along at a terrific pace during the first half and this caused her to quit badly. Al Muller. evidently in his best form at present, only had to canter after disposing of Mettie Bereaud. Jack Parker, running in improved form, came fast in the stretch to take second place from Tom Hayward. Snap took another purse for Henderson and Hogan in the opener, when he managed to outlast Sugar-maid. W. II. Fizers Athie W. led home the two-year-olds engaged in the second race. The presence of the unfashionable Weathers in the saddle discouraged prospective hackers of the filly. Jockey T. Koerner kept up his record of riding at least one winner a day during the meeting lw landing Robin Grey in the closing dash. John Carroll, wbieh finished second, was much the best of those that started ill the race and made a game effort. Considering that he was kicked at the post several times by Ornamosa, and afterwards got a poor send-off. Jockey J. Howard was given a ten-days suspension by the starter for his tailure to get away from the post with Dont, favorite for the second race. How- ard has of late shown marked timidity and on the slightest provocation is inclined to pull up. His riding has been criticized freely ever since a feeble effort astride Jack Denmau at Lexington. For disobedience at the post, starter Milton fined jockevs T. Koerner. A. Walsh. Keogh, Scoville. E. Martin and J. Baavraaaai 5 each. This is the first time since assuming his official duties that Mr. Milton has resorted to the lining of riders. W. J. Young has sold to G. W Carmaek the horse Darknight. which was shipped tonight with others to Toronto. King of Yolo, owned by G. W. Carmaek. had a narrow os.-ape from serious injury at Douglas Park when he broke from his attendant and began racing with a train. He was considerably skinned about the legs when caught. W. S. Williams, who is training Governor Gray. states that he has insured the colt for 5,000 with Lloyds. George Reif announced last night before departure with his racers for New York that he would in all probabilitv dispose of all his htirses in the east. He has received offers for Fighting Bob and Malt-bie. His contract on jockey S. Page has been trans- ferred to Henderson and Hogan aud the boy is at presv-nt in their employ. George Morgan, who in days past, as a member of the racing firm of Chinn and Morgan, raced successfully such noted ho-ses as Lissak. Ingomar. Louise and Pendleton, is once more iu Kentucky after an absence of three years. The Harrodsburg turfman has been engaged in mining lately in California. with headquarters at Ios Angeles, and returned east for medical treatment. He looks for a revival of racing at Los Angeles the coming winter. He says the Arcadia racing plant uever looked more inviting and that scores upon scores of the best and most influential citizens of Los Angeles are anxious to see the beautiful park reopened. R. II. Anderson came from Georgetown "to see his good colt. Joe Morris, run in a handicap a day or two ago. Owing to heavy rain trainer Baker scratched the colt, as he does not fancy a slushy track. All of Mr. Andersons mares have foaled and have again been bred this spring. He is patronizing his own horse Dick Fiunell. brother to that pair of great horses. Dick Welles and Ort Wells. Mr. Anderson reports that Luni Ferguson, another prominent Scott County breeder, is breeding all his thoroughbred mares on shares this season to I. H. Whe.itcrofts slallions. Cesarion aud St. Savin. Mr. Ferguson still owns the Hanover stalliou. Hani nion. hut has quit patronizing that horse, as he seems a failure in the stud. W. Showalter. another Scott County turfman, is still sticking to Box as a sire. The latter, for his chances, has done fairly well in Mm stud ami those eognizaat of her abilitv say that his daughter. Flthcl D.. can beat many of the good three-year-olds in training this season. Will McDaniel seems to have the horses in the stable of J. P. Ross in excellent condition. McDaniel in his time has trained many high-class horses. He won the Kentucky Derby for J. E. Cush ing with Lookout in 1.S93. That same season he also sent to the post tin- great Boundless, winner of the 0,000 Amerii-an Derby in the Worlds Fair year at Chicago. McDaniel also made a bid for the Kentucky Derby as far back as MM, with Noah Armstrongs Lord Raglan, but the tiest that aaad son of Ten Brooek could do was to run third to those two mighty horses. Li-onatus and Drake Carter.
