THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLIES DISAPPOINT. New York. July 14. — The critics have come to the conclusion that as a whole, the three-year-old fillies ot 11*10 are not racing up to the promise of their two-year-old form. Ocean Bound, winner of the Splaa Way stakes and the liest of the two-year-old fillies of 1909, became sore at Sheepshapd Bay in the Mermaid, after having won a couple of earlier races, and was defeated by Amelia Jenks. which had been sick herself. Creenvale. winner of the filly end of the 1!Mi0 Matron, has been retired to Harry Payne Whitneys Brookdale Stud: Schooluiarm, winner of the Great Filly, does not seem to be able to carry her speed farther than half a mile. Turf Star does not appear to have gained in rlesli since she was retired last fall and neither Cherryola nor Mex-oaaa seems to ba as promising as in their two-year-old training. Ocean Bound is the only filly that defeated coltJ last year that has shown that she can do it again this season. She vanquished Helmet and other mature sprinters at Craveseiid in a sprint over the short three-quarters course, and in the Swift Stakes at Bheepahead Bay she took the measure of Fstnnt-leroy and Dalmatian. But. unluckily for Woodford Clay, the stout daughter of Star Shoot and Frying Ship is not absolutely sound. Slie is not perhaps as sore as she was a year ago. but since she limped to tin- scales after her defeat by Amelia Jenks In the Mermaid. Mr. Clay has not eared to race her. It is improbable that she will start again before the Saratoga meeting. School marm failure to make good has surprised everybody. The good-looking daughter of Islington and Mary Stuart was not distinguished for early speed last season. She used to do her best running at the end of her races. She was just the kind of mare, it was predicted, that would go 011 and beat the colts at considerable distances. J. A. Beaaet and his trainer. Jack OeJdaborongk. thought they had in Schootnaam another Flip Flap and Mr. Benin t sent her to Kentucky or a sorxl rest, in Kenrnckr School ma 1 in got the best of attention, but she did not look well when -die came back to the races and she has not Improved in ae»enia-i — In the last three or four weeks. Her manner of running this yen-is surprising. She gpea oat with the pacemakers and sivtv Up quickie However. Sel Iniarni la sounder than she used to be and she is asain back in the hands of the man who developed her. A. .1. Coidsboroiish. who was temporarily out of the Ben-net employ in the earlier part of the year.
